Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

What percentage of employees are really busy and what percentage just tries tries to look busy?

I believe all of us at some point pretended to look busy around the office, especially when our manager was present, but from what I had the chance to see lately make it a regular everyday practice and that behavior goes as to the degree that many are even evading their tasks and the only goal is to make the impression that they have a lot of work on their hands.
Just how widespread is this behavior company wide and when did that become more important than doing actual work?

What a joke , I got calls from CVX people, after I was laid off, to solve problems. I politely told them where to stick it. I was one of the few who was really contributing to the bottom line. so they had to fire me of course.

I agree with the "extremely overpaid" comment below not for everyone but for most of the newly born WFH advocates. Those are the ones who do so little that they have a burning desire to be not seen while they are on the clock.

@5sam, wonderful non-sequiturs. 'Extremely' overpaid? Like politicians, rock stars, and professional athletes, I'm paid by what the market will bear based on my actual and perceived output. Other companies with similar jobs also 'extremely' overpay their people? Same is true for most professors at 'big-name' universities. This arrangement also contains the risk of being released or let go at any point, for any reason. Sound like 2020?

"...can easily be replaced..." How'd you arrive at that conclusion? Replaced by whom? Someone with the same work ethic and performance from another company?

@eli, So what you are saying is that basically you are extremely overpaid for doing a small amount of work that takes a very short amount of your day and can easily be replaced. Fair enough. Thanks for being honest.

The hybrid work schedule makes it look like people are busy, but remember we're only in the office three days a week. The other two days are spent sleeping in, running errands, then making yourself visible ("working") with a meeting or two for a couple hours. Add it all up and you have about a 30-hour week, and that's assuming you're working 100% while in the office. Put another way, if you're loafing it on Mondays and Fridays, then you're "working hard" Tuesday thru Thursday to make up for it.

Chevron has fostered a culture where only certain select individuals are allowed to 'advance' in their careers. Usually this was based on what college you went to, or who your father or grandfather was, or how often you repeated the slogan du jour. Lately it's been based on 'what you look like', as well as those aforementioned criteria. Around 8-10 years ago this became painfully obvious to everyone else, and work ethic just cratered. More time in Starbucks. Longer lunches. Breakfasts in the cafe on company time until they kick you out. More time "working from home" (until the pandemic made that official), more time during 'work hours' in networks or volunteer activities. The truly good put up with it just long enough to find another job. The not-so-good just continue to draw their paychecks. Fortunately for MW, RM, and Chevron, the green transition has made it a much less competitive environment, so we can get by without having 'the best' on the front lines anymore...

My estimate would be that about 20% of Chevron employees are truly 'busy', and virtually all of them are on rigs or involved in mid-stream. The other 80% found out during WFH that their jobs, uninterrupted by coffee breaks or time-wasting co-workers, could be done in a fraction of an eight-hour day, even including inefficient meetings. While some have maintained this discipline during their hybrid week, others have reverted to wasting time in the cafe (breakfast or p.m.) or taking long lunches to fill their 'work' days.

Unfortunately Chevron has so many high high high PSG people who literally produce zero . They’re professional pontificators or workplace posters . It’s literally gross. Even after tons of ROMs they’re so bloated with that. I’ve come in from the outside and never seen anything like it except for govt
