Thread regarding Charles Schwab Corp. layoffs

is promotion impossible now?

I know promotion is probably the last thing on people’s mind now but I want to get some insight to cope with my situation. My manager has been trying to get me a promotion for about a year now. With the salary transparency/fairness act in place in Colorado, a new position needs to be created in order to promote me. Our team had an opening and we were on track with the promotion. But then the forced RTO and layoff came up. My manager hasn’t mentioned promotion since then. Just wondering if it is impossible to get that promotion nowadays. Our team is super competitive and I felt like a promotion justifies my contribution. But now, I have doubts if I should stay. I am not a Director and our team is lean so I am not too concerned with being laid off. Any input is appreciated.

They think it will keep their employees cheaper so they don't promote them and they just give them raises between 1-4%. Ultimately, the employee will leave for a better opportunity elsewhere. The company will then end up spending more money recruiting and training a new employee at a higher salary anyways.

I hate to say it but this is standard in corporate America.

OP here. Thanks again for everyone’s input. What frustrates me the most is that even a so called “promised” promotion takes forever. And i am not even talking about getting promoted to a director, just to Sr manager. Schwab, why don’t you want to promote within? why?

I'm planning on leaving since they are blocking a 54 to 55 promotion. Tells me if there is this much politics for a small promotion like that, I don't want to stick around to find out what future promotions will be like. I wouldn't say it's the last thing on everyones mind because it certainly isn't the last thing on mine.

That team that lost 4 out of 6 total, went from lean to mean.

OP I don't know how long you have been at schwab, but lean teams get affected by layoffs as well. My old team in Colorado lost 4 out of 6 people in 2019.

thank you everyone for your input! The promotion I was referring to is to senior manager. Sounds like there is still hope, but slim and I had to wait.

100% of PL promotions are on hold for at least 9 months
IC promotions are possible but are very unlikely at senior levels

Your manager did you a favor by making you wait on a promotion. Newly promoted Ds/MDs are most at risk of getting the tap.

Just like backfill, I would not expect any promotions to be considered until January or even after. Need to wait for the dust to settle after layoffs.
