Thread regarding Shell Oil layoffs

Skills/Qualities needed to not get outsourced or laid off

What level of IQ, emotional intelligence, experience, and adaptability do I need at Shell to not have my role outsourced or automated? Will being top quartile only in one area allow me to avoid being laid off in the next 5 years.

Acquire skills and insights to be great outside. That’s it.

I agree, there isn't a skill set for immunity from firing. Although being someone's love, secret love child, or having blackmailing information does tend to mean that you are less likely to be fired. It is exceedingly rare for a new hire to make his or her or her/his career last 30 years. There are a lot of 30-year shell staff, but for each one of those 40 have left due to attrition. Heck, at the 5 year mark 60% of people have already left.

It doesn’t matter. Every asset is always for sale. Every employee is just a number. Save as much as you can, network as much as you can. Sorry to be blunt, but no company gives a cr-p.

If you’re asking, you’re in trouble.

Do things that make the company money on a flagship project. Show up on time, leave one time. Be pleasant to others. Don’t talk bad about others. Work hard. Be the teammate you want. And save your paycheck.

Personally, I think if you are not supporting an asset, it will be really hard to show value in the current organization the way P&T and SEAM are getting cut. You really need a skill that can’t be outsourced or that is very niche to survive. Also, it helps if your line manager and upper management think you add value.
