Thread regarding ViacomCBS layoffs

Rumble in the tech jungle

This place really has lost the plot. So first we don’t need a CISO, and PW takes over, and now they have put in an interim CISO who has zero credibility. The perception in tech circles is that PW no longer cares and has already checked out pending a sizeable payout.

@kg We will not be outsourcing security to Oracle. While we will use more Oracle products, cybersecurity is not on the table. Yes, we will use security features in Oracle Cloud.

@j4 Fasting growing? You mean subs, not profit or revenue. You are stuck in the Tom Ryan spin zone. Why do you think our stock is still so low? The only reason they have cut losses is because they have cut so many people aka cost. The only reason Pluto APPEARS to be profitable is because they don't have to pay for Paramount content, which is the majority of the content.

@hd dude, p+ is a terrible app. How can you can you justify the money spent there. What are all those engineers doing? PW and the true tech org has done incredible things, not just keep a cr-ppy app limping along for.

@h5 oracle has a huge InfoSec outsourcing function so I would tend to agree that it will be one of theirs

@jp not quite the point but agree.

@j4 yeah, since they demoted Showtime to a mere category. Clearly there are two or 3 titles that keep subs hanging on.

Isn't Paramount + the fastest growing streaming svc in the US, now profiting?

@e4 I was talking about SD’s most senior infosec person. Not interim CISO CJ. If I had to guess we will get a CISO post merger from Oracle.

@e5 I heard that Pete was a particularly unpleasant character people out here defending PW and his inner circle like their on commission haha

@cy sorry I’m not gonna use a SXSW speech to indicate whether someone who we all work with daily is checked in or checked out. Clearly, you don’t work with him which is fine. To say he is checked out just as as how far you are from reality. Going to assume you’re not working in New York. The guy is in the office five days a week grinding you’re probably working from home in your little bubble.

@dh that is completely fake news. I know Pete very well he asked to leave. He was not surprised by anything. He got exactly what he asked for and good for him.

@dg that’s why he’s called an interim CISO

@c7 agree that PW is not checked out. But last CISO was surprised by being let go..

@ax not sure where your getting your info. SD doesn’t have a proper CISO and he doesn’t have the background or training to be a CISO of a company this size.

PW checked out a year ago. Read earlier threads, someone called it. And go watch his SWSX talk on AI. Looked the same as what an intern presents at the end of the summer.

Is this a joke? The last CISO asked to be part of the RIFs that is why he was let go not because we didn’t need one. We were always going to hire a new CISO when we merged but the merger is taking to long so that is why we have an interim one. Clearly you don’t know CJ he is incredibly competent and a nice guy. I don’t know what tech circles you roll in but PW is not checked out or going anywhere. The CEOs are the ones that are checked out.

@ax I've heard the opposite about CJ but don't deal with him enough to know the real deal, given that SD pays lower salaries than Paramount will likely hit most of the big salaried folk in tech in the end anyway. I should be fine on my peanuts haha

CJ is actually a pretty stand-up guy, knowledgeable, level-headed, business-centric, but he has a very low profile as well. On the other hand, SD hired a high(ish)-profile CISO last year, so I guess we know who's gonna be the permanent CISO, if this thing ever closes.
