Thread regarding Apache Corp. layoffs

Severance question

There has been some talk about possible reductions in severance, is this true? I know severance is not guaranteed and it’s the good will of the company to provide it, but still. It’s hard to believe that Apache would hit us while we’re already down (getting laid off). Has anybody heard anything similar?

"...college roommate they want to hire (in your place)". The story of Apache made absolutely clear. Thanks, Bernal- and the explanation regarding discrimination is hilarious.

Severance is not provided by companies based on “goodwill”, it’s given by a company to protect their interests. They pay you off so you agree to their terms about a few things and to protect their reputation:

To protect the company against lawsuits from terminated employees. This is why employees in protected classes (older employees, minorities, etc.) will receive higher severance, because they may have a better claim in a lawsuit over their dismissal.

To protect the reputation of the company, by including non-disparagement as part of the agreement.

To remain labor market competitive, how a company treats employees throughout the employment cycle, including termination is a competitive factor for recruitment and retention. Who would want to go work for a company that unceremoniously dumps you on the street with nothing after years of loyal service because your new boss doesn’t like your face and has a college roommate they want to hire in your spot?

For those reasons, you theoretically could negotiate severance. But, good luck.

@cqxy+1nJWtu6z It's call risk mitigation dümb a$$. Each protected class gets a bump but there is a ceiling to the bumps. For age, you have one level at 40 and another level at 50.

I’m still confused HR generalist.

  1. 5 weeks per month!? Did you mean 1.5 weeks per years of service?

Sorry! Should have read One Point Five!

If you are a person of color or over 40, Apache is scared of you...they will give you more.

  1. 5 weeks per month and (questionable) top ups for certain diversity candidates. Max 1year.

Severance for the 2020 layoffs was about 2 weeks of pay per year of service. If they go lower, that’s bold yet unsurprising.
