Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Don't quit, wait to be laid off and enjoy 6 months of unemployment. There is a bright side. Intel isn't doing good and the future doesn't look better. There will be more layoffs later this year and more next year.

I’m 63 and don’t see starting over again at another company. If I’m laid off I’ll probably just retire. If not, I’ll struggle on at Intel for another year or two.

@a1 ... this is probably the most honest responsesI have on this site in years. Not including all of the lo$ers admitting that they will hang on forever...

If you only have 18 months in on this ride and not major commitments outside of work then use this to your advantage and get the f' out of this company and the industry in general. Figure out what you want out of life and where you would like to live. Go look for jobs there. Having Intel on your resume with only 18 months won't hurt at other tech companies and will actually be a bonus at small companies. Realize that most people are unaware of this site and Intel still has a positive perception by the average person but that is probably declining so get out fast.

@dk No one here has said they’re being forced to work at Intel. The point being made is that people have different circumstances—whether it’s financial responsibilities, family, timing, or other personal factors—and that affects how and when they’re able to make a move. That’s what’s being discussed.

It’s hard to see how you missed that, unless you’re not really here to engage in a sincere or open conversation. Your response comes off more like contrarian commentary than anything constructive. Unfortunately, that kind of energy shows up in just about every post like this—so it’s not exactly surprising.

But just to be clear: no one’s claiming they don’t have a choice. It’s simply that the options available aren’t always easy, immediate, or practical for everyone. That’s common sense, and it really shouldn’t be that hard to grasp

For those hoping to get laid off...no one is forcing you to work for Intel. You can leave anytime you want.

I’m sticking around and have no plans to leave until retirement. I have never been concerned with past layoffs and I’m not concerned with this one either, but we will see if the decision is made for me. I would also like to achieve the goal that I set for myself of 45 years working for Intel and right now I’m at 42. I like what I do, I like the people I work with and Intel has always had some good people employed. I have seen some good times and some not so good times and you get through them but this one might top all the not so good times from the past. I feel for those employees who have a ways to go in their careers and hopefully better times are coming, good luck to everyone.

@cg Exactly. When layoffs hit numbers this high, it’s not just a few people—it impacts the whole community. We saw it last year in Hillsboro and Beaverton, and this round might be even bigger. I really hope people, especially those with families and major responsibilities, have a solid backup plan. It’s one thing to have it in the back of your mind—actually having to use it is a whole different story.

If you've been working at Intel for 25 years, you never experienced an actual downturn like this one. The closest was 2000, but even in 2008 Intel didn't lay off as much people as in 2000. Even if you think your safe, the numbers are so high that you are not safe. They will have to cut even the important workers to make the cut targets. Even if you keep your job, how fun will it be watching your neighbors become homeless and 50% unemployment in Hillsboro, Oregon?

Always have exit plan ready no matter what!

I think things are different depending on which BU you are in. In Intel Labs, for example, things aren't looking up unfortunately. Budgets have shrunk, people have been sent off, and projects have been cancelled. Over the years, labs has been significantly reduced in size, relevance and impact unfortunately. "One Intel" is not something that resonates with even the leaders, which I think is going to mark the end of the Labs soon. I would be very surprised if it exists in 3 years from now. Therefore, I plan to stay until I land on my next gig. Until then, I will continue to do my best as always as that is the fair thing to do However, I cannot plan to stay while the inevitable end is in sight now 🙂‍↕️

Rough market uncertain economy...plan to ride it out but look just in case

@am while true if you are a high performer and have exceed expectations rating layoffs here don't necessarily take that into account. If you are a valuable resource and thr company benefits from you you are safe. There are no guarantees. Wish you luck

Im sticking around. Why would I leave voluntarily. This is the best job I have ever had. If there was a better option I would have gone there already. I don't get people that want to leave. Im a technician. I have been in this industry for 25 year. I never worry about layoffs. If I have good performance there nothing for me to worry about. I plan on working here until retirement.

I am also in Oregon. I was going back and forth about this. Could not make up my mind what I wanted. It is not an easy decision. But I had a final moment of clarity last week. I can't continue to live this way. I am done. Unfortunatly, I was told already I am not on the "list". So I am trying to figure out a workable offramp right now.

I'm gonna ride this plane into the ground.
Could I leave - sure. But, for me, I like the team I work in and the mgmt 2 levels up.
Would the grass be greener elsewhere? Probably, but would it be worth all the thrash?

I have had a few personal things pop up this year and folks have been more then accommodating - would I get that elsewhere?

I am looking for an exit plan. I joined 18 months ago and have seen enough to tell me even if i make past this round I won't be happy and grow in my career which at this point i cant afford or even tolerate the lack of competncy and urgency here. I have no kids or major outside responsibilities so that helps slightly but I am mentally prepared to be without a job for 5 to 6 months given the current job market.
