Thread regarding GlobalFoundries layoffs

registering my disappointment

I've been at GF since late 2011. For those of you with similar time at fab8, you know the early years we went without raises and bonuses. In the intermediate years the raises and bonuses were laughable. And if what I read here is true, GF didn't reward some people this past year in spite of records being smashed and high revenue.

Early on we attributed a lot of the company's problems to being a "startup", growing pains, or the different cultures (Chartered/AMD/early IBM defectors) clashing. Things turned around to some degree, but what has that gotten most of us?

With news about the IPO and how some people were granted equity and others were not, it's just another reminder that I should treat GF as a paycheck. Since that's all I deserve for the effort I've put in the past ~10 years, apparently. I've gotten literally what any other job would offer, +/- benefits and perks.

I'm also surprised at how openly people are discussing their disappointment, and how tired people are. It takes a single follow-up question to "how are you?" and the floodgates open. Only one person I've spoken with has disagreed with this sentiment, and tried to put things into perspective through the lens of the recession in 2008 ("be happy you have a job")??

Serious question for those pro-GF: is there anything (positive) that makes GF an exceptional place to work? Asking before I start looking for a new job. I really don't want to move to Texas or Arizona, but we'll see where my search takes me. Maybe GF's strategy is to not be in an excessively hot red/purple state?

@OP GF is not exceptional. It's another corporation trying to make money for its investors, and reward its senior leadership whether they deserve it or not.

Any raises, bonuses, awards, grants etc. you get is all a calculation to them. What's enough to keep you happy? What's enough to keep you at GF and productive? Welcome to capitalism.

Everyone should heed @4sza. Tons of jobs out there. Tons of companies willing to grant equity with vesting periods based on your value to them. That's with a substantial pay increase. These companies have historically well-funded bonuses too. Just be prepared to move.

If anyone is still not looking outside for job opportunity I this red hot market , then you must be too highly paid ( makes u a potential for a lay-off or you love ur current job which I dun think many does love their job at GF)

No increment for level 10 and above and mediocre adjustment for the last 2 yrs ...

Many folks who left have gotten 20-30% higher annual compensation than GF

I think if equity was granted to more people a lot of the longtime employees that left over the past few years would have stayed. People would care more and be more motivated. A lot of the SLT departures that started in 2018 make sense as people realized the equity they got wasn't worth staying the additional 3-4 years, especially after abandoning 7nm.

The only loser if more equity was granted would be Mubadala since it's theirs to give. Once the shares are on the market, it's the investors whose money is at stake, not GFS.

Fact is GF is loss making company and if they give free share to all it will increase loss only. However I don't like discrimination only job level 9 above are eligible for free shares they should be ones who should have punished as GF still making loss due to their decision

@2asv+1dpOdyCw I don’t even think it is fab specific. It is circumstantially landing yourself with a bad manager and it seems more prevalent at Fab8 probably in the next town hall need to ask the rate and reason of attrition. The last time we asked was because of family reasons and they expected us to believe

It seems meeting with managers is fab specific. I work at Fab9 and I see my manager every day and we have regular one on one meetings. I can discuss anything related to work with him without worrying about what I am saying.

@2nrz+1dpOdyCw My manager used to have monthly 1-1 and would meet whenever you wanted to. But the problem was there were no discussion points really and it became more about outside work discussion. Eventually I drove the work topics and there was never any action taking on those. It was mainly one way data flow

One on ones are supposed to be monthly not weekly and yes my manager really does them and will meet more with us when we want to

Does GF have channel to get feedback? Manager is always busy and no time for 1-0-1.

How many in GF frankly have weekly 1-0-1 with manager and proper appraisal discussion.

All communication are from top to bottom

@1fbd+1dpOdyCw Understood where you are coming from. There are macho folks who complain and never speak a word when asked by the SLT because they are in one way happy that they are getting paid for doing nothing. And then there are folks who speak up but are not believed at all because the manager is least interested in making changes. The biggest trouble down below is that in everyone actually is ants more without doing anything and the people who actually are ambitious and actually are about their work are the ones that are frustrated because the managers fo not care at all.

I've been in the industry for a long time and I've learned that if I'm going to complain about something, then I should have a solution ready to fix whatever the issue is. I don't think that exists in this case.

I am @1eqx again. Thank you all for being civil in your replies. I knew that my post wouldn't be popular and would get some criticism, which is ok. Some of you got my point, which is that you are the owner of your professional success and happiness, not your employer. I come to this board every now and then to check the internal news from different sites, not necessarily because I am frustrated or upset with work. This forum is more than just layoff news.

Anyways, complaining and criticism is healthy and encouraged, however, are you using the appropriate channels? Did you express your issues to the HR or the SLT team? You still can stay anonymous and send them professional emails. I doubt complaining on this board would do anything. I am sure complaining to your coworkers all the time won't do anything either. Let me give you some real life examples I encountered at GF, I was assigned couple projects with a lady engineer when I was hired and she used to spend hours complaining about work, her life outside work, her partner, you name it. I used to listen, and then when the time for actual work comes she finds any excuse to walk away and avoiding the work. Guess who ended up doing the work? You guessed it right, I ended up wasting me time listening to complaints and doing the work. It came to the point where I completely avoided her. Another coworker also complains all the time for hours, and his work delivery was subpar and I had to take the time from my assignments to fix his mistakes.

Nobody is entitled to anything at any company, there are tons of opportunities elsewhere. Please be mindful of your coworkers time and space in the office, and use productive methods to express your frustration.

One communist country is paying 3-5x of what GF pays to go there and many are able to find switch employers with better pay. Think you need to refresh your mindset about all communist countries. GF sucks and its Singapore campus (the topmost performing fab in GF) is losing hundreds of employees to communist countries every quarter.

registering dissapointment - equity, equality, diversiry drumbeat getting louder as IPO approaching. Put the money where your mouth is!
On a related note to "We live in the US ... compared to any of the communist or socialist countries that we all know about." - indocrination instead of meritocracy and "do as you say" - is a "copy exact" from socialist countries that we all know about, is it not?

@1eqx if you look closer you'll see that the points you made were already made, just less directly. This person also mentioned that their coworkers open up to them. The poster is complaining a bit here, but this is a forum for discussion so they're free to post whatever they want. They realize it's time to look elsewhere. They also have GF as a benchmark now so when they leave they can put their new job into perspective, just as you are now.

That said, if complaints stress you out, then perhaps you shouldn't be browsing this site. Just some advice.

And if you aren't able to lend an ear IRL to let someone offload because it will stress you out, maybe you have the same problems as them and just don't like being reminded? It's a defense mechanism and that's okay too. We all deal with things differently. Hopefully you're resilient enough to continually do that or self-aware enough to take steps to destress in other healthy ways. Good luck.

@1eqx+1dpOdyCw I agree with you 100%. I did exactly the same because of an incompetent manager. However let me play a bit of devils advocate. If there are no complaints things do not improve and everyone believes things are fine. As much as people would like to say it to SLT that they suck they are all worried about retaliation and lastly as much as you want to leave immediately things take time to fall in place as it is evident with the amount of attrition.

I understand it is difficult to see nai much of negativity around you and having your own stressors in personal life and if you believe it is affecting your productivity, pragmatically you need to do your work and shut yourself out from the negativity.

We are all adults here, you need to look for another job if you are not happy and stop complaining. That is what I did before I joined GF 7 years ago. I was miserable in my previous company even though it was much bigger and respected company in the tech industry compared to GF. I can say my experience at GF so far has been alright, not great. If you are not happy with your current situation, whether it is work, relationship, living conditions, etc., then you need to be proactive and work on improving your circumstances. You are the only one who can do that. We live in the US where you have tons of opportunities compared to any of the communist or socialist countries that we all know about.

Please do yourself and others a favor and stop complaining, I don't want to go to work and listen to coworkers complaining all the time. I got work to do and other stressors in my life that I need to cope with. Find a better place if you are unhappy here, problem solved.

My opinion might come off as harsh, but I am just being pragmatic here.

@gmh+1dpOdyCw I was told the same "send emails to get noticed". It worked, only because recognition isn't a widespread thing at GF. Recognition is so important and underutilized in GF. It's not just saying "thank you", it's praising someone or a group's work in front of others. You shouldn't need to get yourself noticed. Your manager or lead should notice and get you in front of others.

One time I felt I should be promoted after outperforming peers and covering for my manager that was on leave 3/4 of the year. I was told they needed to promote PhDs they recently hired instead.

@cfu+1dpOdyCw I wasn't sure if I felt too entitled even with validation after talking about it with others, but I agree. I need to find some place new.

@fdr+1dpOdyCw I wouldn't call it free stock. A lot of us deserve it based on past and present efforts. There's nothing that guaranteed us stock, but "actions speak louder than words". There's a difference between doing what you're obligated to do and doing what's right. We know where GF stands.

@1fcr+1dpOdyCw I thought I wanted to stay in the industry, but even now I am questioning that. I'm a bit tied down due to my house and family, but I guess any good company will have a good relocation package to help.

As previous poster noted, do yourself a favour and find a job that appreciate your skills and work ethics. GF seems to only reward the flashy non working yes men/women (but do nothing) types.

If there was any doubt at all, look no further than the IPO. Any other decent company would take this opportunity to reward the WORKERS. How many of them patting themselves on the back and getting rewarded have never even been inside the Fab to.look at the worker bees.

Worked at malta 7. 5 years, never had another job where the management told me, yo my face, the only way to get a promotion is too send out emails and get your name out there.

Sorry. That's not my job. If I produce results, reward me for my results. You pay managers to recognize talent and do their best to retain that talent.

When a fresh out of college kid gets hired off the street with a bigger sign on bonus than our yearly aip/qpb and higher starting wage than myself, it's laughable.

This july was an eye opener. I've since applied to many other businesses and have more than a few to choose from.

Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere
