Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

In office 4 days Rumor

It's a waste of time being in office 4 days a week. Other than ELT going on a power trip it provides little value. It looks like they want to make employees as miserable as possible so we'll all leave. The clowns up top will go down in history as the ones that ended a historic American company. Great legacy guys!

I don't think that most of us employees have a big problem with coming into the office at all, you have it wrong. The problem is, we don't want to actually work and we are so used to not having to work most of our WFH day, it will be a big change. At the office we can't near as easily take care of all of our personal business, household chores, etc. on company time and still get paid by the company. That will be very hard to adjust to. I really don't understand how people do it, going to an office and working all day.

@OP+1v4CLanY, you mean, as opposed to showing up for a full week so you can get things accomplished like normal companies?

Well ConocoPhillips just announced earlier this week that they are going back to 5 days/week beginning Jan 2025. So it's not like it is unprecedented in our industry.

The rumor is it all starts Jan 1 2025. Not gonna debate its merits. Its gonna happen and MN and MW dont care if you quit out of protest. That is just one less severance.

All those hoping to live in San Ramon and do 2 days in Houston per week think again. Its gonna be Monday-Thursday with Friday being WFH.

Those who think the office damage will save you dont see the big picture. After a 30% reduction in US headcount we can fit everyone.

Today in the office the guy behind me watched an entire movie (looked like Transformers?) on his phone. I know this because our floor got changed to the stupid open desk layout so everyone can see and hear everyone else at all times.

But he was in the office which is all that matters. He was more productive than any WFHer

Will they still allow WFH on weekends?

If they require us to return to the office full-time, I will only work when I’m in the office. If anyone in India or a Manila needs to meet with me, I will only pick up the phone during the time I am in the office.

It is likely to happen. It has nothing to do with productivity. It has to do with

  1. MN / MW showing control and power
  2. Having a good sound bite to investors
  3. Making rank and file employees hate their jobs so they can push a few percent of them to quit without severance.

Dont fall for it. Just get in the office. Smile and eat the sandwich they serve!

@1xhp, no one is forcing you to work remotely on Mondays and Fridays. You are more than welcome to go into the office full-time. Please lead by example!

I do miss some aspects of being in the office full-time, but I also know that being there 4-5 days a week doesn't equate to more work getting done. With the global nature of our teams, hubs in Manila, BA and now India, so many of us are on virtual meetings and not interacting with people in-person in our locations, that being there doesn't add value and only adds frustration.

And some of you clearly think that working from home isn't "working" which is a ridiculous old-school mindset. If people are going to slack off, they are going to do it whether they are working from home or the office. Two hour lunch breaks every day with co-workers, hours spent doing puzzles, talking stocks, etc.

The problem in most cases isn't where people are working, it's that we have poor managers that are more concerned with growing the size of their teams so they can get promoted, than understanding that they have too many people and/or people wtih inadequate skills or experience.

Solving that problem doesn't get them promoted...

It’s hysterical that all the whiners that don’t want to come in the office are down voting comments. IT has way too many egotistical employees… it’s disgusting! You know who you are! Get over yourself!

No enough desks. This has to be a joke. Agree or not, how do you not see there is exactly the amount of desks they want?

It doesn't matter how many hours you work or how you're paid. The issue is if you do it at home they will and are willing to send your work to India. Grow a brain and get into the office.

@1xge Hate to break it to you but when you are salaried you are paid for 40 hours a week and anything over that is unpaid. Companies downsize and try to squeeze more hours for free out of who's left. I agree with the OP. Let's all join in as salaried employees!

They make the rules we don't. I suggest going in. If you need the day check with your supervisor about staying home. If you get the OK which I assume you will then all is OK. Just don't abuse the system.

I’ve never encountered so many whiners at Chevron. Time for Chevron to clean house of all the employees that don’t do sh*t and the ones that whine about having to come into work! Good grief! Kick them to the curb!

If you are working OT for free, then you are not too smart and actually should come into the office so someone can keep an eye on you.

I think to save the company money all the hourly workers who are so against some working from home need to go salaried like us and work OT for free! This k about all the savings to the company and the one team mentality!

Or they will go down and the smartest. If we all quit they save the company. Lot of money and can hire a cheaper work force. Most of us have said we are stuck in the past. Well there you go! I agree with get over it and do your job.

There is no way they can go back to everyone going into the office at this time. San Ramon doesn’t have enough space since moving to new location. Those on 2 day in office schedules are rotating for a desk. In Houston they are still fixing the windows and working on the Modernization Project on the vacated floors . With ROM’s coming up they are not that vested in the majority of the people in either location. Schedules will remain 2-3 days in office. I think they are more concerned with taking attendance to have a reason to let the employee go, if needed.
