Thread regarding GlobalFoundries layoffs

December Globalcast re-cap opinion

Go back and re-watch the globalcast after reading these points.

  • TC, CFO, HR rep all struggled to contain their emotional states. This is odd. I've been through several layoffs at this site and others in my career. Never have I seen so much fidgeting, uncertainty, and almost, fear? (Not sure how to quite word the plethora of emotions on their faces).
  • All three were extremely unprepared and unbecoming of leaders that have decades of experience giving hard talks and navigating tricky situations. They had multiple weeks to prepare for this as well.
  • They let slip that this is not the only or last layoff within the next 12 to 24 months. Their words, they're preparing a system for voluntary severance packages in 2023. They also stated that if these layoffs don't work, more drastic measures will be taken. I.e. more aggressive layoffs.
  • TC said this with certainty, not if; inflation will continue to rise, the feds are going to raise interest rates again and energy expenses will continue to rise, as well.
  • TC isn't all knowing, regardless of your personal opinion about these people however, they are privy to information that we are not. They meet with heads of states, governors, presidents, princes, some of the best data analysts on the planet, etc.

My opinion, given the greater context of HOW they said what they said, we are in for a very rough few years and we all need to prepare individually to make moves for our own financial security. They will be laying off more people at GF in 2023.

@1vcd I thought this too, but wasn't sure if they meant they couldn't afford anything as in they were laid off and had no income, or couldn't afford anything because they aren't paid enough.

Pretty sure the average salary at Fab8 is $90k now. If you have trouble living on that amount, I would question some things. And I'm usually empathetic. Even if you make less than average, let's say 50-60k max, don't look at GF as the issue, look at your own decisions and other support structures that are failing you.

GF isn't a charity, although some people treat it like that and GF lets them get away with it.

C-Suite boy is just jealous he can’t wine and dine to a tender tomahawk steak from 15 Church, like us upper-crust GF contributors. He is left to the 50% Cafe discount for his prime meals of the day.

It's the holiday season, you should treat yourself to ABC Mouse, or perhaps Hooked on Phonics as a nice gift to yourself. You'll finally get that respect you so desire. Heck, you can probably get a basic spelling diploma from LinkedIn!

There are reasons for that contempt. His choice of people in leadership positions, and his poor messaging. E.g. no messaging for some exec sudden exits such as ER and GU. Allowing a long period of uncertainty and toxicity in the name of transparency. Doing big announcement press releases such as CHIPS or Automotive or 8.2, and going silent after that. Putting spin on things - such as the misleading first chart which was normalized and showed that number of customers increased is a good thing. No. You lost big customers. I would rather have 5 big customers than 50 startups who were turned down by T. Promoting his pet people in high positions. His inability to control IBM baggage, etc etc...

Agreed. They can also never pull the “our values” hr stunts ever again. All the enter together and leave together during Covid (which was bullsh-t)…. That type of stuff. NEVER AGAIN! And if they try too we got to put them on blast and say woah no not so fast. Those days are over. You have shown you true values and colors. We can not allow that whole cycle of nonsense start up again. Which you know they will try a year or so from now. It’s all lies.

TC and rest of the C-suites are just shedding crocodile tears. They act emotional in front of you then laugh their way to 15 Church for a last minute table there while giving themselves a pay raise with all the cost savings they stole from the workers. Do not let their pathetic attempt of human empathy prevent you from seeing what they truly are- reptilian grifters that somehow turns a recording breaking performance by the workers into empty dinner tables in the workers’ homes this Christmas while they feasts on our labor.

@op . You have an inflated view of TC and his team of SLT . As a head of a 3rd rate semi supplier he is not in the same league as the tech leaders who run shoulders with heads of stats. As for his nervous demeanor , how would you feel and behave if you were him. Reading all these comments from his larger team about him on this site and other forums? I have worked at couple of other semiconductor companies, all with track record of layoffs, but never seen such contempt for the loop guy and his executive team elsewhere. In this area, GF takes the top place!

@vgg Tom came to his position in 2018, this is the first industry downturn he’s seen in the drivers seat and he knows that managing the ship through this storm is the only way Mubadala lets him stay. ER may well have been a canary in the coal mine, SLT is out of excuses and needs to show results post-IPO.

@OP TC is a nobody in the big picture like the rest of us. He's just in a different tax bracket. Don't fool yourself or others.

He acted that way because he company he probably believed in is showing signs of being relegated into obscurity (for sure this time).

And honestly the layoffs and situation the company's is in is probably eating him up inside. He realizes he has to sacrifice a few to save the many. I think that's a point that's lost on many here.

This is what the controlled decommissioning of the Western economy looks like.

As it turns out, the first world middle class is too expensive, and we have been deemed obsolete.
