I joined in 2005 and counted 23000 US layoffs by 2015 and then I lost count.

Those numbers were publicly announced percentages of US workforce, and the US workforce population numbers were public at the time.

This isnt even close - I was at Cisco a long time, and the CEO used to boast regularly about sacking the 'bottom 5%' every year (and regularly did!) - thats several thousand per year at least...

I lost count of how many colleagues got the chop, it was literally like the hunger games...
Sometimes guys who really werent performing, sometimes guys who were who just happened to be in the wrong team at the time, often folks who the new management didnt like (and they wanted their own cronies instead, of course)

Boy I dont miss any of that, but the numbers were WAY bigger than this..!

@bt The company's first layoff was in April 2001. There was another one in mid-2011 which was preceded by an ER package.

There are only layoffs in the Bay Area? There were no layoffs before 2015?

Complete bullocks!! I was part of the 2017 LR as was my entire BU and there were more than 709 from my BU alone. And we were a fraction of the overall number.
