Thread regarding Illumina Inc. layoffs

Received work offer - not sure if to take it or not.

Long story short is I received a pretty good job offer, its a raise compared to my current role and the team I would be joining seemed great through my interview process. The question is: to take it or not? I see a lot of negativity going around about the company but the couple of people I know that work here do not seem to share that same experience.

Any thoughts?

Think of a phishing scam.. ‘Think before you join’. Layoff every quarter…

@18z completely agree... you should not have any loyalty towards these corporations.. they are just vehicles to make money for their investors and if you happen to be on the right side of the equation go for it and make money and leave when things change.. Don't look into this institution as somewhere you would stay for longtime and retire with a meaningful professional accomplishments.. such companies are very few and ILMN is not in that category.

In todays environment with employers showing zero hesitation to lay you off without taking personal situation into consideration, one is tempted to take a more cynical view on employment. You have to be a mercenary and any place offering you something more is where you go. Remember you might be out any day so keep looking for the next better opportunity. Most places are **** , but if you get something you benefit from -- why not?

Leave. Money isn’t worth the stress. You can move for money from your next job.

It depends on the team. My team (in RnD) is very and the projects are fun. We had some layoffs though

@OP
It is your decision to make and taking the interviewer interaction as sign of good team may be too early.
Only under work pressure will the person true colors be shown and never know if one will be thrown under the wheel to save one own skin.
Anyway, think well to evaluate temporary monetary gain against judgements by emotion before taking the leap.

Good luck

Im in the opposite boat right now. Im being offered ~10% to join another company thats performing much much better and I'm choosing to stay. Yes things have gone downhill but at least for my team its still a great place to be. Hope I dont regret this :D

@bs they actually are. In my team at every lay off round, the person who last got hired got let go. Every single time. Lost 3 so far on a team of 8. It won’t stop there.

There is a good chance that new hires are on the top of the list to be laid off. I do not recommend taking the risk.

The people you work with and the project you are on are a big influence in your happiness. Regardless of the current atmosphere, all groups and departments are different. If you feel a good vibe, and that your project and peers will be a good fit, take the chance, especially if it’s a better offer than your current employer.

@as what is 10 or 20% raise if you get let go 2 months or six months later which there is a high probability to happen right now.

If it's 10-20% raise, I would take it. If it's lower, I wouldn't accept the offer.

Run! Stay at your company.

Job security is literally zero. Multiple round of layoffs. Not sure when the company will steady but until then there is always a risk.
