Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Voluntary Layoffs?

I’m hearing chatter about the potential for voluntary layoffs based on the RTO mandate. Again I just overheard some people talk and am not confirming anything. Just curious if anyone else heard something similar.

I know they probably don’t need to offer voluntary if they’re expecting people to quit because of RTO, but the job market isn’t as great as it seems and most people might just stay.

Severance is tax-withheld different. IE at the federal supplemental rate. Which is 22%.

When you do your taxes next spring, severance will be considered normal income and taxed at whatever bracket you fall into, so you should get that extra withholding back.

@x3 if you’re a gsr8, your projected bonus should’ve went up instead of down - got any numbers you want to share to back that up?

Ford is trying to inject as much pain into their employees to quit so they don't have to do layoffs (or as many). I've been here less than five years as I've seen ridiculously new BS performance reviews and SMART objectives the last couple of years, was told my bonus will be less next year because of how they calculate it (I'm a GSR8), and RTO 4 days a week in Sept. What's next? I'm looking aggressively to leave Ford, but as others have posted, the job market is terrible right now. And AI is not helping things in my field (tech).

What do you mean “taxed differently”?

@bj

Why make their job easier? The severance is taxed differently and if it’s not more than PEP duration then why bother? They should have better things to do than finding excuses to terminate you.

If most of their career progression happened at Amazon when they were the safety school of FAANG companies. Get out as soon as possible.

@ar+1k0vt2v6p You are correct they asked for volunteers in LL4, LL5 to retire. Lots of backroom convos

Everyone should be doing this. Ford is always looking to cut headcount. I wouldn't be surprised if the cuts pick back up in connected vehicle. There are some retirements going on and I can't help but think some LL5 and 4s have seen some writing on the wall they don't want to be part of or are being shown the door.

Absolutely be ready to leave if you are a high salary GSR - even a high performing one.

@ae The thing is in the course of a career these cyclic layoffs/hiring sprees are exhausting. Looking at the past 40 years you see a company in decline. Even if you switch jobs strategically and play the game well so you don’t get laid off, it is a lot of stress. If you had hoped to get more from your career than a paycheck the cycles will wear you down. You may end your career feeling like you worked hard but accomplished only making a paycheck. Many people are fine with just making a paycheck, but if you’re not you may look back and feel like you wasted your best years.

I’d encourage people to start looking for other employment now. You don’t have to take a job offer —- but don’t bury your head in the sand and live on hopium. The volume of “retirements” and requests for volunteers for leadership retirements tells you that there will be a lot of GSRs let go.

I’m in a personal position where if I was offered a package, I’d take it in a heartbeat. However, the fact that leadership is accepting the attrition vs in-office trade off, indicating it’s coming down from top-level, and none of us hearing of any instance where someone has had their remote exemption request approved, I’d say it’s very unlikely they’d offer packages.

Tangentially, I’ve seen other comments on here asking “if you’re so confident you’d find something else/hate it here, then just leave!” Well because finding a new job takes a certain amount of time, effort, and mental load. The path of lesser resistance in my situation right now is to stick it out at Ford and see what happens while at least making mitigation plans for what could happen. Also the labor laws in Canada strongly favor employees compared to the US in that we’d be more likely to get severance as “firing with cause” accounts for less than 5% of terminations in Ontario (going by chatGPT). They basically must show serious misconduct in this cases. Ford is less likely to risk us taking it to court where employees are also favoured in these situations.

Makes you wonder if they’re going to lean towards laying off more US-based employees in Model-e compared to Canada so they can save money on severance. But that’s just me speculating purely on the above assumption. I’d assume it’s a factor at some point in the decision process but who knows, I’m never had to make those decisions.

@OP the “voluntaries” are for the LL5 and LL6. They have been asking who wants to leave. The GSRs are a different animal. They are hoping for high attrition with RTO especially in IT and engineering including model E. There will be significant layoffs in this space. Contractors in this space also being teed up for cuts.

Voluntary? 🤣

Why give a package when people will be up in arms over having to go back to 2019 4 days in the office and just quit?

Anyone waiting for a voluntary is a misguided individual.
