Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

MSP?

According to reddit, some folks are getting offered a "Mutual Severance Package" in their yearly performance review, i.e. take this and get out or (what's behind door 2?). So far the reddit people haven't given any more detail on how they got there and what would happen if they didn't take the deal.

From Reddit General Motors, several people received MSP yesterday (Feb 19).

Part of the problem is the SLT sets a company-wide standard of everyone coming in 3 days a week. But then it lets lower level managers prevent enforcement if it wants, and that varies from manager to manager.

That's what leads to preferential treatment.

There needs to be one company standard, and it needs to be enforced the same for everyone everywhere.

_Right now, there are some people allowed to WFH because they live one mile further than 50 from the office, while others who work 75 miles (or more) away are told they must attend in person or face termination.
_There are some people that haven't attended RTO since March 2020 once that definitely live within 50 miles of work while others in the same group are threatened with dismissal.
_There are some people who come in once out of the 3 days consistently while others are being threatened.

This is preferential treatment. I did consult a lawyer and found out that the laws favor those who are discriminated against for various reasons such as s3xual, religious, race, or disability. I believe this is a gray area and someone may take the case and create a legal precedent. If I'm asked to sign anything, I will refuse and will try to line up legal counsel. I would encourage others to do this as well. Discrimination for any reason is not right, even if it is punishing some to favor others. Is it really worth two months salary to sell yourself short? Sometimes you have to stand for something.

I wonder if it's possible to not sign anything and then sue GM because the firing due to RTO non-compliance is selective. In discovery, it will be found that some are not fired even though they didn't comply.
Selective dismissal is discrimination.

I know of a couple product engineers (BVAC) that were let go in the past week. One with over ten years experience. Direct GM - not contract. This not just an IT “event”.

"because of RTO non-compliance"

'Ah-ha!' Some of you must be thinking.
Fired not for performance but for not showing up to work.

Here's the rub: How many of you know a handful of people in your group who have been getting away with not coming in for years but nothing seems to happen to them?
They escaped the review process without getting fired. Who knows, they could have gotten "GM plus". Very likely.
That's corruption in management.
It sends a message: If you are in the club, you can walk on water. If you aren't, you better be in that seat for 8 hours, T-TH and you better be instant accessible on Monday and Friday via IM. You better be hustling too.
The special people in the club? Sweetheart assignments with sweetheart deadlines and they can do it when and how they please with the expectation of promotions.
This is the old GM. This is the new GM. Nothing changes, but you better wake up and show up!

Not just IT. Finance and Business orgs got hit today with reviews. 20 people in my org were let go(given minuses because of RTO non-compliance).

It was a bunch of BS.

"Maybe the Great Replacement is starting."

I think of it as the Great Transformation because replacing IT with Silicon Valley people is only part of what will take place. The entire organization is very likely to be transformed. Where are we now? GM is saving money by closing buildings and forcing us all into one place, whether we fit or not. It seems like chaos and that maybe it was not planned well but I believe things are unfolding exactly the way they want. The herd will thin out and the strongest will help GM transform itself to survive the Great Financial Collapse Pt. 2.
New product lines, new services, new dealership structure, etc. Many of the new hybrid and low cost vehicles will come straight from China. They will close plants, consolidate builds and do everything they can to cut costs and become more efficient.

Maybe it's just IT being targeted.

IT has two vulnerabilities.

  1. IT is easy to outsource to cheap 3rd world countries like India and China. They can save a lot of money if they don't care about quality.
  1. They've already made noises about GM's IT not being up to Silicon Valley standards. Maybe the Great Replacement is starting.

I wonder if RTO attendance was one of the factors in the performance firings. Scanning Reddit, seems like a lot of people were very surprised they were let go. If the managers didn't convey dissatisfaction until the last minute I can empathize. Still, I have a very hard time believing they didn't know they weren't cutting it.
And...still no info on which orgs, so I am assuming they are all IT.
Isn't there some kind of paradigm shift happening in IT?

Okay so the question has been asked over and over on Reddit with no responses.
It's been asked here with no response.
No one spoke up to say, "it happened to me too, I work in ____".
Finally someone here says 20 in their group were let go in IT.
Why only one person speaking up? Why the secrecy about which org?
There are so many business functions at GM and only one has been referenced so far.
Takeaway: We need more information if this is to believed. The reason I'm suspicious is that more orgs should be affected if Gm is targeting people in reviews, not just IT.

OR - it could be that there are a lot of low-hanging fruit in IT and this is the first wave? Who knows.
One thing is for certain, there's a lot of fear in the air and I believe everyone is waiting for something to happen. Not a great environment to work in.
Ask yourself this: Are you busy at work? How are your co-workers acting? Do things seem okay to you?

Looks like they are going after people who are working less than 8 hours a day for RTO as well. 3 of my people in my group were let go yesterday.

GM started the MSP’s today; odds are, more will come next week.

They are using the old trick from 2018-2019: basically, you have a 1-1 with your manager(video call) and hr gets added at the last minute.

SO depressing…..

What's an MSP?

How is this different from an ISP or VSP, depending on if you have a choice to take it?

"Which org" was asked multiple times in the thread even though other questions were answered.
If someone really was dismissed with a "MSP" they have no obligation to hide what org they were in.
Because of this, the "MSP" claim is 100% suspicious.

Also... not a single other person reported this happening.

Since these are being offered during an annual performance review would be curious if it could possibly have anything to do with how the employee has performed on the job?? Maybe some more accountability? Guess we’ll see as more happen and more details are learned.

Yeah I saw that. I don’t get or I get annoyed when people write these comments then don't indicate the org at least. Just write your org people.

Most think that everyone in the Reddit are IT when it’s not…
