Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Getting older is a liability

Reaching 50 at EM feels like walking around with a target on your back. Age discrimination is real, and they don’t even try to hide it. Older employees get treated like outdated equipment. The change in how you're treated is literally tangible. It’s a toxic culture, plain and simple.

The main thesis of the original post is a well known fact and everyone is fully aware of it. Always has been part of the deal working for Exxon and EM. The Company is simply looking for legal, least expensive wayd to get personnel turnover and reduce costs.

Recently retired from Upstream, mostly expat. I must say I've enjoyed training and befriending all of the Indians I've had the chance to meet. They are intelligent people with manners and respect. Always a pleasure. I applaud the Company for working to bring down global operating costs. What's wrong with that, we work for the shareholders (most of us are shareholders one way or another). ?

so maybe try doing a better job helping BTC understand what brought the success versus treating them like second class citizens. Some of them are truly smart and gifted. Being publicly insulting in meetings, biased against them and making zero efforts to understand them is not the answer.

@xv I think the context was not against the "Indian" people. I read it as the majority of those across the BTC just do not understand the business and history of what has driven the success of this company. The "Indian" people are incredible, vibrant, and willing to learn but I'm sure you can imagine the view that is being seeing by those that have built the success.

Outsourcing is not the answer, and i'm sure there will eventually be some level of policy in place to avoid this in the future.

@xv "Our culture honors all living beings equally, hence we never invaded another country, never meddled woth others business but always acted as a center of global culutural exchange and trade."

LOL!!! Your good friends Bangladesh and Pakistan? No need to look so far, North India looking down on the South? Oh no need to look so far, just the very subtle "I'm a very humble Brahmin... IYKYK Dalits eww" whenever the opportunity arises.

I love my Indian friends dearly, but so many Indians are so full of sh-t

@xp Yet another biased, literate but uneducated American.
Indians at BTC are minimum bilingual and some able to speak and write probably 5-6 distinct languages with distinct scripts. And you think just because grammar is off, it is a BTC engineer writing it?
This is a BTC engineer, proud Indian writing English. Would you have guessed the same? Are all American fat because most ovesity is in the USA( an actual irredutable fact)?

Grow up and deal with changing global political and econmic order. It is a historical cycle and power does not remain in the hands of one civilization all the time, USA is on the decline. Learn to treat the work with respect else your future generations will pay the price.

An Indian is a human being, and no less. We have the same emotions, the same belief in fanily and values, just presented differently. Yes there are issues, we are hugely overpopulated but we have been plagued woth invasions for almost 1000s years now. Only 75 years of independence. Give us 200 and the tables will turn significantly. And you are welcome to come along. Our culture honors all living beings equally, hence we never invaded another country, never meddled woth others business but always acted as a center of global culutural exchange and trade. The current
Western world is too binary to br seen as a global leader. You are believers, we are seekers. You have principles - right and wrong, good and evil - which can be used to justify any action. We have an open mind, and wisdom of 10000 years of civilization that true happiness is internal and all living beings are different and are to be respected.

Just respect everyone and love in peace versus living in fear or guilt.

@wa The context to how this reply was written tells me this comment came from someone within the BTC. Unfortunate for those who truly understand the business. I'm currently 37 and can say I've learned everything about the business from those who grew the business. My experience with the BTC has been mixed, some good people, but constantly changing out resulting in significant progress regression.

@b2 obviously, you don’t work for the company or you are young with limited insight into system

So blatant. Majority at 50 are pushed down in the ranking. They apply “potential” evaluation in your employee evaluation process. Your potential at age 50 is usually locked to your current level with some exceptions. Intent is to prevent raises. People at that age are less likely to quit so why pay them. However, they are now looking for ways to reduce older US employees by any means.

Recent retiree. Absolutely true. You get treated totally differently as you approach 50 and NRE. Didn’t use to be this way but it’s the new way they are using to get people to quit or even become pip fodder. They can’t move fast enough to get rid of older more costly employees and move everything to global kindergarten centers.

I guess things have changed I retired after 35 year at the age of 65. My sup asked me to stay another year to finish my project but I say no. (Upstream, Eng). Life is good. Good luck!

I assume the person asking if you talked to HR is a troll. Anyone that works here knows HR is for the company and couldn’t care less about the employees.

The real problem is that the older employees are not as gullible and easily manipulated as the younger employees.

These halfwitted supervisors can’t handle the fact that their employee is not licking their boots.

I’ll take their money and put in my time. That is all.

this is not a joke at all. it is so widespread it is known to anyone who works there. if a legal firm could somehow get statistics from HR about ranking vs age, there would be a major case available to them. at the moment, the company takes advantage that there are no consequences for their blatant age discrimination.

@OP shocked, never heard these complaints about EM before. I can’t believe it, have you provided these complaints to HR?
