I recently picked up bowling and joined a league. But my manager loses it if I miss his calls after work hours. I’m not on call, not getting paid, but somehow still “expected to help” because I’m the team's youngest. He hinted I should only bowl on weekends if I care about my performance and my career growth. I am not going to glue myself on slack 24/7 for a single digit raise. Why is it never enough no matter how much we give? Do I really have to give up my hobbies just to keep my job here?

Over my career I’ve reminded everyone I know that any company wants you dedicated to them, right up until they decide they don’t need you anymore. I have been laid off multiple times in my career but was lucky enough to leave Splunk on my terms (retirement).
Yes our manager does the same with our full team responding except for one who claims he is always in prayer. Because of his particular religion nothing is ever said to him.
@OP are you polishing those? may be your manager wants his polished and he use them only on weekends..
Does your manager smell like armpits?
search youtube for fa-t noises and play it when he calls you. if he asks tell him you spend time like this after work and you need privacy. if he asks for a meeting play fa-t noises 24 hour in the background.
Decades ago Cisco made everyone in my software development group wear pagers(!!) so we could always be reached and other companies mandated company cell phones be with us 24/7. I've never worked at a company where leadership didn't enjoy abusing their employees.
In the words of Cisco's false god John Chambers, "I'll always have unrealistic expectations of you!"
Larry the new services director is a complete dolt with several well deserved HR cases open against him yet he survives. All you need to know about modern cisco.
You are saving your managers life
that is why only higher caste Indian people are promoted/hired for manager roles and you are their servant always.
It largely depends on the team and the manager, but overall, as an international company, Cisco "follows the sun" and employees are expected to as well.
@ag Splunkers are still using Slack.
@b0 how rude! You are saving your managers life with each call! How self serving of you! I don’t care what you are doing if you are eating, with your kids, with a dying family member at a funeral! You step out and answer that call so your fearless leader doesn’t hurt himself. Do this until and even after he puts you on the LR list and lays you off..,could be all the difference between a substantial layoff package or just chicken scraps red badges get! Save him! Serve him!
somehow still “expected to help” because I’m the team's youngest.
hmm, how young? 24y or 54y? was it stated or your conclusion?
My manager suffers from a bipolar disorder. He calls me 10 minutes after I logoff. I have never picked up. After he did this on 4 different occasions with no response from me, he stopped.
He may be busy preparing a case for PIP.
My manager suffers from a bipolar disorder. He calls me 10 minutes after I logoff. I have never picked up. After he did this on 4 different occasions with no response from me, he stopped. Apparently, talking to employees is his therapy. What an azzh0le.
This next generation is loosing its work ethic. Cisco is not making french fries, working a part-time summer job, before you go back to college. This is an international company. People need to realize this is a technology company, with high wages; and not making cheeseburgers. If you do not want to make the commitment, indeed go back to working fast food; and we will find someone who wants to make the commitment and do the work. We believed in you, and hired you. Show us you were, and are, worth the company's financial commitment to paying your wage.
Sounds like your boss needs a reality check. I rarely get contacted outside of work. I think it’s only happened a couple times, and both times they were considered emergencies. But if your manager expects that to be a normal thing, that’s insane.
Turn the tables on that manager and message HIM on Slack! The second he doesn’t answer you go to his manager and request a meeting with HR regarding his actions! You set the 1:1 with HR and read that S-B his exit options!
Why t f would we use Slack and not Teams - I cry fake!
Most likely an Indian manager
Bullsh-t post - this is contrary to Cisco's culture. dont believe the nay sayers.
Would you like to join my bowling team? We bowl at 5AM. We need a ringer.
The sooner you learn this the better: Even IF you drop everything, every time, and work late hours and weekends to work on Cisco problems, they will still drop you as soon as it no longer makes financial sense to keep you.
There is no 2-way loyalty. You are a number on a spreadsheet to these people, nothing more.
Do not sacrifice your hobbies, your relationships, your time with friends and family for Cisco (or any company you do not own, for that matter). It will never be worth it, and the day they invite you to a meeting with HR and explain your exit options, you will regret ever going above and beyond for Cisco.
I tried to set the “I only work from 9-to-5”
boundary at another company …
I got whacked …
You lost the war the first time you ever responded after hours. That was the time to lay down the law. Now you have no leverage unless you’re irreplaceable and no one’s irreplaceable.
