Walking out the door...more like kicked out. I'm not going back to be bled dry and disrespected for the privelidge.
They need to hire cheaper people given all those laid off a few years back who were to old and expensive. All their knowledge keeps walking out the door.
If you're talking about manufacturing engineers, GM is probably competing against Boeing.
But software people can work in any industry.
And if GM wants software people, they'll have to compete against Google and Facebook. Not just with salaries, but with culture and benefits.
Guess it depends what kind of people GM is looking for in the 8,000 hires.
Google and GM are in different industries, producing different products. GM's competition for job applicants are probably companies more like Lockheed or Boeing.
Now more than ever the onus is on the employers to attract and retain good people.

Especially for way less money?
Oh - what I meant was - I thought GM Defense had software developers on the west coast, and that is where some of these 8000 were going to be sourced from. There's an office in Troy too right? Hope for some good opportunities forthcoming.
I'm sure when those high value software developers are choosing whether to work a start up where the skies the limit or GM where you have the same amount of risk for maybe a bonus, they're going to rush right out to the rust belt.
My experience was coworkers looking for jobs on the west coast but not getting them because their background consists of GM.
My experience at GM was coworkers looking for jobs on the West Coast.
Isn't GM sourcing its high value software developers from the West Coast? There should be a good talent pool to draw from.
At GM, programming means Simulink and Excel macros
If you are a friend or relative of the current political administration, GM will hire you in a heartbeat.
Cybersecurity and programming is the future forward. Going to need to defend the world against all the cyber hackers that intend to drive your EV off a cliff.
