Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

3 msft employees lost their lives due to layoff

"Someone shared with me that they knew 3 people around the world who were laid off and became so depressed that they eventually took their own lives. One of them had been mistreated by her manager so badly.

We talk a lot about mental health, but rarely about how toxic layoff culture creates or worsens it. The constant fear. The way it's done. The silence afterward. Now it's costing lives.

When will corporations take responsibility for the emotional damage they cause? How many more people have to die before we admit this isn’t normal?

If you're struggling, please know this: your job is not your worth. You are not alone, and there is help. There is always another path forward, even if it feels impossible right now."

I know of two people at Cisco that unlived themselves. The unseen harm of LRs and toxic work place is real and heartbreaking.

I've been here a long time and worked for over a dozen different managers. Several were "pencil pushers", 2 were certifiably insane, and most were middle of the road.

Out of the 2 that were certifiably insane:

  1. Had me to the point thinking that if I beat the sh-t out of what is the worst that could happen
  2. The other literally had me thinking of doing self harm

The Morale of the story:

Yeah, people can make you think and perhaps do stupid stuff. No matter what - always remember Cisco is just a company. Your job is just a job - it doesn't define your worth/value.

Sad that I felt this way - and more sad that other may perhaps fall into the same trap.

They lost their lives because they took their own lives. The responsibility for their own deaths lay with them, not a layoff, not the company.

okay, we are all aware that working in tech went from great to su-ks in just a few years

as long as the list of available jobs is small and the list of potential applicants is high, it won't change

a lot of people just need to walk away from this industry

when the dust settles and the list of applicants is about the same size as the list of available jobs, workers will get their power back

Is it true that many years ago red badge from Turkey jumped off the top level of a parking garage after getting laid off by Cisco? Maybe an old timer would know.

1. Irrelevant to Cisco

It's happened at Cisco as well.

Unionize and see how they squirm

You'd be so much better off working 39 hours a week for minimum wage minus union dues and no benefits! Cisco engineers coming in the door with zero experience start at the 75th percentile in the US and go up from there. Given high pay and low quality too many are self-entitled and really should be in a different line of work.

Everyone knows companies care more about their bottom line than the lives they affect with layoffs.
