Working through an offer to join Software group there and wondering if it’s more the same?

If it’s the software group, just know that the Reddit is typically 90% dominated by S&S people, so take their opinions as what you’ll be experiencing. The GM experience varies wildly depending on director, teammates, cross functional work, and direct manager. The popular ‘safe’ group in S&S is the VMEC group and current work on HEV’s. The Reddit is known and read pretty widely across the company, and you’ll notice people outside of software do not post as much on there because it’s generally not as bad.

@ah Mary didn't take Farley up on his offer to race against him in a Mustang GTD. Clearly Farley is the better leader.

Mary Barra has more working brain cells than Farley and the Ford family combined.
Take the GM job.

The automotive companies cross-pollinate in Metro Detroit. As such they all have pretty much the same mentality. Fords culture is more toxic as it is so Friends and Family oriented. Have been at Chrysler, GM and Ford. @OP consider other industries if you are hanging in Metro Detroit.

Its the same but without the family is what I hear. They do forced ranking just like we do now.

I dont know if you noticed this but for ford follows GM

I worked in IT for GM in the Fischer bldg years ago and I can tell you its almost exactly like Ford. If you like to work on 1 thing for years on end and to be pigeonholed, you will love it. Leadership is also very similar... lots of MBA's that can talk about economic theory and tax accounting but have no idea how to solve a technical problem.

Ex GM guy here. Got laid off August 2023 as a software engineer. Toxic culture. The use stacked rankings now so 15% of the company are always sc--wed by the bell curve.
