Thread regarding 3M layoffs

3M automation

Just like Mcd and Walmart, 3m's new push is replacing employees with robotics.

I helped maintain the machines and buildings at 3m Center, retired 2 years now. We were still using alot equipment and technology from the 1970's.
3M moves like the Federal Government, slow and off course. They couldn't even automate the lawn sprinkler system! Smart engineers there but so much nonsense to get things accomplished.

Cool excuses to save a few pennies. 3m doesn't understand when you lay people off it trickles down into everyone's spending pockets and in the end those people don't buy 3m products. Snowball spiral that has 100% failure.

Their automation initiative PACESETTER died of natural death. Some lucky folks got a big promotion out of that program. This is dead now

X2 on investing in robotics and safety- there’s no way they put that kind of capital back into the plants

Yeah, that just isn't happening.

3M won't spend the capital dollars to update equipment into the 21st century, let alone the dollars to build decent automation to reduce headcount.

Seriously, some plants can't get the money to fix a leaky roof, what makes you think they're serious about robots?

Fake news, 3M isnt investing in much they need cash to pay the lawyers. Why automafe when youre going to be out of business/divesting soon

It is a year long push for simple things with a 2 year payback. These are jobs no one wants to do. Why stack 1,000's of boxes a day when you could be doing value added work that doesn't destroy your body. 3M is behind in this category and it is one of the biggest gaps they need to close to stay competitive.

What is more safe, having people interact with every little thing or having enough automated that you can control it through a computer screen and feed it inputs? We need to adapt to the smaller manual labor market for cost and safety reasons. Anyone against this is probably a WFH couch potato that is mad they can't make the peons wear out their bodies.

3M will not invest fully into automation. They have such a complex CAPEX justification. Anything more than 2 year payback will be rejected.

Talk about SAFETY is our priority.

My foot.

Not sure where you’ve been. There was an other thread on this topic last week and the consensus is 3M cannot afford and are not innovative enough to invest in robotics or AI. They wouldn’t even spend the money money needed to develop Harriet the HR virtual assistant. And the person leading that work left the company because of non-investment and half assery

They won't. Cannot afford.

Just look at the PACESETTER initiative.

Died halfway. Same as A3M.
