H-1B visa rule change

Trump is going to change H-1B from a rigged lottery to a wages paid system. Companies will no longer be allowed to bring in cheap labor.

@ab When you break the stats up by ethnicity, the US education system is at the top of the world. There's a reason why so many foreign students come to US universities.

Most Cisco H1Bs are hired by Cisco contract firms like Wipro, Mckenzie, etc. Cisco benefits from labor arbitrage without getting their hands dirty. The H1Bs hired directly by Cisco are paid entry level for a given position & then worked like dogs with promise of path to green card like indentured servants. It's a completely legal grift that depresses wages.

lol, joined as a new grad at 85k base in 2016, making 180k base now. Still on h1b but if you think h1b comes cheaper than 100k-120k in cisco that time is over.

Companies have been abusing the H1B system for years.

When tech giants aim to sponsor an H1B visa holder for a green card, they must legally prove that no qualified U.S. workers are available for the role. This involves advertising the position in specific outlets, like Sunday newspapers. If a qualified U.S. citizen applies, the company is obligated to offer the job to them instead of proceeding with the visa sponsorship.

These positions are not listed in LI or company career pages. That’s why these companies often use small outlets to advertise.

Misleading. H-1B visas already require employers to pay at least the prevailing wage for the role, and the lottery only occurs when demand exceeds supply.

Replacing this lottery with a wage-based system requires congressional action; previous proposals to prioritize higher-wage candidates were never enacted into law.

Even under such changes, companies will still be easily able to foreign workers legally at the prevailing wage, so the idea that cheap labor elimination is Word-Salad.

@be Here is the reason H1B’s will continue to grow. The US no other choice.

World Top 20 (WT20) Rankings (2024):

The U.S. ranks 31st in the World Top 20’s Best Education Systems, which focuses on student performance in international assessments like PISA (Program for International Student Assessment). This lower ranking highlights challenges in K-12 education, particularly in math and science.

@b8 That’s not a smart comment hence back to my original post - it's an educational issue.

@ap the solution is not to cut our feet off. address the reasons that we, a nation of 100s of millions, "don't produce enough talent", especially when knowledge workers in the country are getting laid off left and right and REPLACED by CHEAPER indian labor. the cost of living continually rises but wages never increase. you're luckier and luckier to have white collar work these days.

It will never happen - it’s very simple, the US education system does not produce the tech talent needed to excel.
China would crush us if there were no H1B programs.

Trump doesn't even know who CR is and doesn't care what Cisco does.

One day when he finds out how much labor Cisco pushes to Bangalore, he will make some offhand comment about the company being a "has-been" and that will be the last of it. G2 will try to make some cope at an all-hands and then it will never be spoken of again.
