Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Am I actually required to give two weeks’ notice?

What’s the worst that could happen if I just walk out?

You are not legally required to give two weeks notice. It is considered a professional courtesey and you are kind of burning bridges if you do not.

Fun fact: If you give Cisco two weeks notice and tell them you are going to a competitor, they will walk you out immediately and compensate you for the two weeks.

@h7 I can't believe I have to explain this but you DO understand that people leave jobs right? And that they recommend people to their friends who are hiring? I've gotten most of my positions with the help of networking through former work connections. If I pulled some bull those connections would have remembered and wouldn't have been there for me. Looking out for your future means being smart. Sounds like you don't quite get that.

@ag Sorry but thats BS - Cisco legally wont give references anymore in any case due to concerns about being sued, its policy. I was approached many times at Cisco about being a reference, and was strictly told by management ALL we could say was "Employee X worked at Cisco date to date B". Maybe for re-hire at Cisco in future (!?) for informal feedback internally...

Look after your OWN future.

the job will be gone forever as references and in fact may reference against you if they ever have a mutual acquaintance that is interviewing you.

It is very clear respondents here are not legitimate Cisco Leaders. You are not required to give 2 weeks or any notice. You will be fully eligible for rehire. The 2 week notice is just a courtesy not a requirement.

You should be fired for a question like that. FAFO

@ad I worked with someone that gave 2-weeks notice once. Manager refused to acknowledge it. He left his laptop on logged into customer incidents every morning. When he got home he would log out. He blocked his manager's phone to not receive calls. He "worked" 6-months before the manager even knew he was gone. Tried getting Legal involved to recover 6-months salary. Legal just informed the Executive they had no legal way to know whether he worked or not other than being logged into customer incidents. Since he was logged in, it accounted for actual work. Manager was fired for it.

At another company, half of the team got laid off. The other half walked out the same day the layoff announcements went. No notice, just put laptops and equipment on manager's desk with sticky note saying I QUIT with their badge. Manager begged the other 50% to stay and tried to rescind the layoff and severance. We all received our severance and went to work for another company. They hired our entire team of 12.

Cisco has no loyalty to you, so you have no loyalty to them. Just walk out and go on your way.

Otherwise you will remain on payroll and continue to receive RSUs. You don't want that to happen, do you?

I've walked off professional jobs before, no notice, once I got a new gig. Just handed my badge into security, wiped my laptop, turned it in, and walked out the door. It's a great feeling.

Your company won't hesitate to walk you out the door. Loyalty is dead.

Employment at Cisco is 'at will' - they are not required to give you notice to terminate and neither are you.

Not at all. But...your manager and any colleagues who you affect by walking off the job will be gone forever as references and in fact may reference against you if they ever have a mutual acquaintance that is interviewing you. Act at your own peril.

Or tell them you got a job at a competitor and THEY will walk you out! Eligible for rehire? Maybe, maybe not?
