@h1+1jzv79wm6 -- Here's what's even sadder: @OP+1k1yg5d9p
The title here, though taken straight from the reference link, is a bit misleading - it should say "Only one building remains of those slated for demolition" - only a handful of the buildings were in that category.
And with IBM now declaring it's 2 majors as Hybrid cloud and AI
This got replaced earlier in the year with the 4 pillars: Hybrid Cloud. Data, Automation, and Transaction Processing. IBM is no longer an AI company (never really was).
@a9 What was really sad was the pollution that IBM left behind.
https://www.epa.gov/hwcorrectiveactioncleanups/hazardous-waste-cleanup-ibm-corporation-endicott-new-york
Now, IBM is certainly not alone in leaving behind polluted sites, it wasn't all peaches and cream.
I say this as someone who visited Endicott and East Fishkill many times in the 80s as part of my job related to card design.
@ds 2023 I presume the last to leave was some piece of VM/CMS.
From Google
IBM's physical presence in Endicott, NY, concluded in October 2023, when the company's lease on its last remaining facility expired, according to Wikipedia and press reports. While IBM sold its Endicott manufacturing site in 2002, it continued to lease some buildings for research and development until the final lease expired.
When did IBM in Endicott finally tank ? the late 80s , early 90s ?
Yes for those of us who joined IBM in the 80's and pre G Man Gerstner, working at IBM was a joy and dream. With the G Man IBM got what it wanted: CHANGE. However.
Was that CHANGE good and correct? Or did it change IBM into nothing more than another stock. Ask 100 people on the street about IBM and you get:
Is IBM still around? I really do not hear about them anymore and do not know what they make or do. Etc...
IBM really does not "make" anything anymore. Just a collection of companies they have bought (195 since 2000) and manage like a hedge fund. 24x7 paranoia about being laid off or put on a PIP performance improvement plan. Jobs being moved to India especially as well as Costa Rica, Philippines, Bulgaria, S America etc etc. Clear age discriminations RA'ing long timers for newbies.
IBM had over invested in mainframes in the 70s and 80s thinking it was plug compatible systems from Fujitsu and Hitachi that was the threat when it was WINTEL coming up from the bottom. IBM has become dysfunctional with weak leaders that never would have existed or been promoted under the Watsons. So IBM quickly fell behind and also got very risk averse having been sued by the US GOVT twice for monopoly/antitrust market share and tactics.
And with IBM now declaring it's 2 majors as Hybrid cloud and AI, it just is not resonating in the market place since few if anyone know IBM has a cloud or does AI despite all the animated and juvenile ads for watsonx. What a horrible and boring name!
IBM. I've Become Mediocre. And not your fault. You did what you were told by inept people upstairs. Look out below if you think it is bad now under Arvind; just wait till smarmy RT Rob Thomas hosts video office hours every hour so he can see himself on video.
I was an intern at IBM Endicott in 1984 and both IBM and Endicott were thriving then.
I remember at lunchtime the streets used to be a sea of white shirts and ties. All the businesses and restaurants were thriving. I used to walk to the office 2 blocks from my apartment in an old Victorian house. It's sad to see what IBM and Endicott have become 41 years later.
