Thread regarding ViacomCBS layoffs

I feel sick to my stomach

I just joined five months ago. Left a good job for this thinking I was making a great career move and now I'm likely to be laid off. I'm guessing that last in, first out works here as well. Why did they hire anybody knowing they were planning major layoffs? Why play with our lives like that?

@OP you are joking right? you left a good job for this organization in the midst of a sale? your judgement is lacking.

@a1 agree. Last time I checked we've had major rounds since viacomcbs merger at least 3 quaters per yr. Goal promised 750M in cost saving synergies in 3 years.

Post SD merger plans, 3 CEOS promised an additional 500M In savings before transaction is completed.

Even before merger Viacom has been known for consistent staff reductions for many years.

They don't care about you.

@a5 Disagree with this. I was once a part of a mass layoff after only 3 months of employment. FIFO.

Good luck to all.

The only piece of friendly advice I can offer you is not to throw the towel yet and not to speculate. If you cleared interviews and cracked a job even during these tumultuous times, there is no reason why you are not in the top 50% (half) and definitely shall see the end of the day.

@OP I really hope you don't get laid off, but didn't you do any Google searches on the company while applying for the job? 1500 layoffs last year? The CEO was laid off? Merger with Skydance? Media industry in decline?!

Hear you, feel for you. But this writing has been on the wall for more than 5 months, certainly at the time you were interviewing / accepting a role.

Did you do any research on the company before joining? This shouldn’t come as a surprise.

Here’s the thing-- there will always be layoffs.

I’m sorry for your situation, but if it’s at all a consolation- last one in and first one out is not a metric you can count on.

Best of luck - but there will always, always be layoffs (well, until there’s no company)
