Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Intel employees barely work

Even the layoffs aren't making them work harder. Is it time for 996?

Huh. That just mirrors 13th and 14th gen desktop CPUs.

@OP hard work is not the issue. You still think this is an employee issue and not a leadership decisions issue.

@d5
Intel failed because they cannot adapt to a changing market - phones. Bloated with way too many groups doing similar or the same work and turf wars resulting. Managers never managed that , every one just wanted thier own cozy job. And some false sense of security that ‘ hey we’re intel’ - we can push around our suppliers, make senseless purchases- mcafee. and they never paid enough to retain top talent, probably thinking we don’t need the best because we are intel. Both my wife and I worked there 15 years plus each so ya it’s said, but some manager getting to an employee and firing him for not staying late only indicates the arrogance displayed at the time, and that corporate arrogance manifested across lots of groups led to the demise.

Yes they do! And they pretty much brag about it outside the office. Very little work. Steady paycheck. Living the dream.

They promote the techs that run their mouth and F up the most, seen it many times. The managers are je-king off somewhere and have no idea who actually does high quality work. Plus the techs don’t have any real incentive besides not losing their job but hey the vendors pay more anyway.

Reading these posts about no motivation is sad. I started in 1990 with PTD in Aloha. Back then we had a sign in sheet at the security desk. You got in trouble if you arrived late more than 3 times I think. Parking lots were over half full on weekends with engineers running experiments. I watched my manager follow an engineer out to his car to lecture him why we don’t leave at 5:00 pm when there is work to do. He fired him the next week. Intel had an immune system that effectively weeded out lazy or poor performers. If you were “not of the body” you did not last long. By 2000 most engineers became millionaires and some technicians too. It’s painful to see Intel fail because of poor management, though rank and file employees also bear some responsibility.

@cc And I'm talking Manufacturing Equipment Techs here. I'd love to see a downtime pareto that included an indicator for 'BTF'.
Boneheaded Tech Fu@#up'

I've seen way too many times where one of these events easily doubled the downtime.

Quality and safety have become abhorrent in the fab. What used to be an outlier, has become the norm, with very little to no repercussions.
If we ever got bought out, the first thing the new landlord would do would be to fire half the techs.

When Intel was flush with money. They started hiring equipment vendors for maintenance contracts, even though there were Factory techs who were supposed to do maintenance work. Factory tech started idling around. That has now become the culture in the fabs. Now even production technicians spend time in the cafes rather monitor production. Scrappage has shot up to the moon.

Earlier I worked in a customer-facing role serving account LV and stumbled on another group whoa...who claims to work in a customer-facing role and the customer have never ever heard of them in short do not know they exist. During internal meetings they were claiming to be leading in LV account as 'customer-facing' experts. This was lying right?

Sure, not a problem. Just point me to the nearest outlet for my RV. Then I could WFH onsite.

Oh, wait, you still ban that?

What an out of touch post. After all of this going on you think staff will be motivated, dedicated to your corporate goals, and making extra efforts.

Zero stability, slashed benefits, toxic environment, and clear evidence of failed management.

Its not the setup to toss yourself into a career. Its the setup to hang around getting paid until you line up the next thing.

Worry about yourself. This place is winding down. Layoffs, selloffs, firings, and more reduced benefits.

Even if your section gets sold off. You really want to hang around with the same people from these layoff rounds... I doubt it.

@a4 that's only 12 hours a day. It needs to be 8-10-7.

@OP that is because most of who are left behind are worthless piles of dump. My manager is still here but she moved herself to be a IC so avoid the layoff. Well so far. The work she does is take input from 1 person and copy paste to another. Her technical knowledge is less than a grad student in college at the moment. Her speaking is hard to understand. Expecting anything from her is mindless. All the while she has been here for over 25 years. Beyond DEI and being a woman of color I cannot imagine any other reason she has been here this long. Many such cases and thats your answer.

Unless you’re in upper management and well connected, anyone who is doing more than the minimum required and not learning other things and looking for other jobs is just being a useful id--t.

If you work in manufacturing, management’s plan is to ultimately shut it down. To make the optics look ok, since they got a ton of money, they will at least put up a pretense of trying. Many in the fabs have degrees in mechanical, chemical, materials engineering. Time to try to find a different industry within your core area. Samsung TSMC is no paradise either.

What is the motivation to work? We are all resigned to the fact this ship is sinking no matter what we do -- may as well get ours with as little effort as possible.
