Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

How to survive layoffs at Cisco?

I know many employees who are extremely political and have been working at Cisco for more than 15 or 20 years, regardless of performance.

  • if your business unit just su-ks, it doesn't matter how indispensable you think you are
  • if your business unit is indispensable, it doesn't matter that you do nothing
  • it doesn't matter who you do favors for
  • your hard work is irrelevant
  • it matters if you are easily replaced or have low/easy skills
  • it matters if you are hard to replace and have boutique skills that are needed
  • it matters if you identity as non-binary/gender-nonconforming
  • it matters if you are a woman of color

etc etc

@a3 Going on PTO will not save you from being LRd. People who are impacted are often notified during their PTO.

Here’s a lesson I learned early in life. You’re not working for the company to push your political views. You’re there to make $$$ for the company! They don’t give a cr-p about you and will dump your a-s in a hot minute.

22 years here. we are political. but other orgs are also political. we are fairly matrixed so that adds to the mix, you need to know how to play the game in such environment. the more relationships you build, the more favors you do, the more you protect someone the more your chances of surviving grow. the politics start to play a lot of role once an org becomes complex and we are complex. also, there is a lot of money in the game so it makes it cutthroat - the stakes are big. there are cultural, organizational and business angles to all of this. having a large pool of south asian employees adds to the mix as most folks do not understand how the game is played in those circles as things go beyond raw power or $$$ - also, geographical distribution plays the roll and interdpt relationshisp are layered on to of this. also, having frequent LRs, almost scheduled and prescribed, sets the pace for the whole thing and if you've been arround long enough you start seeing patterns in this and you learn how to play it and how to increase your chances for survival. i also agree with @a1 that being political will not save you, it may help you survive but it is by no means the only reason for avoiding the lr roster.

People who get laid off inevitably assume politics is the only reason others have not. It plays a role but so do lots of other things.
