Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Chinese EVs

Why are we banning Chinese EVs to protect companies like Ford who want to outsource American jobs to India and Mexico while reducing the labor force here as much as possible in manufacturing?

How is that American made?

Then on top of all of it, Ford EVs are more expensive and lower quality than Chinese.

Why should we suffer as consumers? To support American industry?
It’s a joke, wake up people! Contact your congressperson, senators, and demand that you can get an affordable EV imported here. Stop helping the Fords.

Where are you planning to sue the OEMs for defects and bad work? In China? LOL.

I have been saying for decades we should not rely on China, since is our enemy. We are weakening ourselves, giving them all our IPs.

How many Chinese cars of any kind have been through the FMVSS validation process? Do they meet the roll over, side intrusion or even the seat belt anchorage tests? Yeah, it's true you can save a ton of money by NOT testing and meeting safety standards and offer a lower priced car. Then at what dealership are you planning on getting your service work done?

I, personally, purchase products based on the best value to me as a consumer.

The 'American' content in my household is nearly zero. I don't consider this a bad thing. I have been getting better content and performance for less money.

This is how capitalism works. American companies just aren't able to compete with the global manufacturing and workforce.

Not just outsourcing - insourcing where they can’t outsource. They either move our jobs overseas or move foreigners here to take our jobs.

A reckoning is coming. Be sure of that.

Politicians don’t want to tackle the hard problems that make U.S. products more expensive and the things that put U.S. producers at a disadvantage.

Government regulations, taxes and labor union monopolies make manufacturing in the U.S. more expensive. Market and currency manipulation by most countries make the U.S. dollar uncompetitive.

Politicians just want to kick the can down the road. And here we are, down the road.

US auto companies can't figure out how to make cars at a lower cost, just like TVs. They will eventually give it up and let other countries make it at a lower cost.

If the US government allowed Chinese vehicles to be sold in the US the the big 3 will be thinking about survival and bankruptcy protection asap.

US made vehicles su-ks.

If it were a country other than China your position might be better, but why enrich an enemy (friends don't hack, steal, or undermine you)? Better off to cut all trade with CN off.

How did the Chinese learn to make EVs?

Oh right, they violated the patents of sleazy american companies that wanted to take advantage of the cheap labor in China.

This clusterbleep keeps getting funnier and funnier.
Are any of the CEOs or majority shareholders of these companies being held accountable? Let me rephrase. What is the chance that I win the next lottery?

What is the problem to buy and transfer some cars here and drive ? The police is not stopping anyone, nobody will concern for 11k. But the real reason is that this cheap models are simply unsafe and don't meet NHTSA req., NA saftey etc. It's 100 mi battery rubbish w/o warranty. Im not defending Ford here, just said that cheap Chinese EV is not a solution. We have lack of charging and EV infra, quality also can be much better. All of this due to high cost of R&D...

"It's lie that cheap Chinese EV is more reliable, safe and better quality."

If so, there shouldn't be anything that would worry Ford / the USA. Let those cheap, broken Chinese EVs in, let them compete and let them fail. Like, no one is concerned Chinese phone makers would threaten Apple. Just let them in and let them die out.

Unfortunately, the fact that the government is so concerned says it all. Let's face it - Ford is no longer competitive. It's overpriced, and isn't any better than the Chinese ones.

The tariff may hopefully keep / bring out the jobs for many hourly workers, but the salaried may still be outsourced to LCCs and/or replaced by H1B's. End customers will continue to pay the premium of the "American" brand.

It's all about saving hourly jobs. Salaried be damned.

It's a fair point, but the planned tariffs I keep hearing about are supposed to also force/compel Ford and the other OEMs to manufacture in America.

Let's be honest: China, Japan, etc. all structure things to benefit their local companies, which in many cases are extensions of the state anyway. Japan manipulates their currency to benefit Japanese manufacturers, China forced the OEMs to partner with a Chinese company until they could steal enough IP etc. The list goes on and on.

There's no reason the USA shouldn't be "selfish" and set things up so that our economy benefits at the expense of other countries, since they're doing the same thing to us.

But it has to benefit the people, not just the Ford/GM shareholders.

The ban on foreign vehicles is simply a tactic to force American consumers to buy American named-brand cars (regardless wherever they're made). This allows Ford and other American named-brand car manufacturers to extort their consumers to paying higher prices, since they have no choice in the matter.

This also eliminates a free-market society, in which when you get rid of all the other competitors, this means higher prices and fewer choices for the consumer. Say for example if State Farm is now the only choice you have for car insurance in America, then they can raise your premiums sky high and you won't be able to say no or switch to another competitor (because there is no other).

It's lie that cheap Chinese EV is more reliable, safe and better quality. The quality and safety compare to the same price. This is why Tesla has success on Chinese as well.
