Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Learned Helplessness

is a psychological concept popularised by the American Martin Seligman.

When an organism is forced to bear aversive stimuli, especially when it seems random, it becomes unable or unwilling to avoid subsequent encounters with those stimuli, even if they are “escapable”

because it has learned that it cannot control the situation.

For example, when an elephant trainer starts with a baby elephant, they tie one of the elephant’s legs to a post with a small rope. The baby elephant will struggle for several hours each day to try to escape but when the elephant grows up, way more than strong enough to easily snap the tiny rope, it won’t even try

It was taught that any kind of struggle is useless.

Every one of you watched as distinguished engineers, top sales people and beloved leaders where randomly fired whilst inside you know they were better than you in many ways. If there were some sort of discernible pattern maybe it would have made sense. Now, with Q1 over and nothing to show for it, everyone is bracing for the inevitable.

Ask yourself. When did Cisco tie the rope around your ankle?

All totalitarian governments throughout history have employed (and continue to, witness North Korea and China) exactly this same tactic. People (subjects) learn to essentially just give up.

Yep. Cisco has been doing this for about 5 years, seemingly right after the CEO cried on camera about a certain incident in the news. That was the beginning of the transformation.

"If I'm reading this correctly OP, you are saying you have the intelligence of an animal correct?"
Partially correct. WE have the intelligence of an animal because WE are animals.

as an example, you are 98.6% Chimpanzee, as am I

Chimps have meta-cognition, they smile and remember numbers and they play. Chimps also have a form of morality that is ethical and truthful. they show empathy. The main difference between Chimps and Humans is our propensity to lie and deceive to further our personal gain.

TLDR: you're an a$$hole

Or you can play the game. Architect your life for the gift of time. Sock away your money in savings, reduce spending, cancel subscriptions you don’t use, live minimally, take care of your health….

And take a package. Then go back to Cisco on a phat contract making more money for a couple months and let Cisco pay you to look for a new job.

It’s a sweet deal if you plan and strategize for it.

A nontrivial part of this is knowing that "better" exists. If I started a career at Cisco and heard HR going on and on and on about how we only hire the top 10% I'd think all the bad code and massive overruns were the best that could be done, a belief which has kept Cisco as a whole from fixing these problems.

I was EXTREMELY lucky and got to work for companies that had the kind of discipline to deliver on time and budget, release after release after release. Any one of many failures I saw at Cisco would have bankrupted all those companies. I had a hit rate of under 50% finding those companies, and in every case the great work only occurred in specific groups. For the more than 50% that were fails: when a company has a new product to do what their existing products can't, there is a 90% chance the new product will be cancelled and you'll join the existing wage slaves trying to bug fix their old products into the ground.

@OP+1v8Ah0SF Ask yourself, do you plan to stay on unemployment the full term?

Just because LR did not affect you now doesn’t mean it’s safe for future . Everyone is replaceable irrespective of the talent .
