Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Middle Management Perpetuates Toxic Environment

It’s been my observation that a big problem with the toxic environment is middle management and supervisors. They left the career path that developed marketable skills long ago and/or never did have them so they jumped on the management merry go round.

Since they don’t have any skills to get another job outside of Exxon Mobil they have become masters of playing the game including performance review season. They su-k up to management like little piglets on the te-t and protect each other due to their shared incompetence and quickly circle the wagons for top management in an effort to get a cherry tipped on their ice cream.

Even good people get su-ked up in this vicious system and quickly get put in their place.

If you are a supervisor/ middle management (we know you look at this site), ask yourselves what skills have I developed recently that make me employable outside the company for the same pay or better?

And why do people with desirable skills keep leaving?

For those wondering, yeah I bailed years ago and took a better paying job with a much better work environment.

They don't "choose" to leave behind marketable skills. They are selected and told what do. It used to be an honor but now no one gaf.

Most accurate post I think I’ve ever seen on this site! Sls we-ponizing pips, running off the best talent because it’s competition and a she manager from some far off land that hates white males. Pretty much sums it up.

@OP So do all of the serial whiners who have aged in place and collect $250k+ annually to skim vendor technical reports and doze-off during zoom calls.

The culture would improve overnight if these people would move on, but we all know they won’t, so it’s a moot point.

Middle management are a holes. I don’t know how they train them to be so. Perhaps they can’t get any further up the chain and they have to keep those who work down…

But it takes a special type at Exxon…

You write how I feel. Some might had genuine passion for engineering field during school. Most times, it turns out that the passion was for $ and not engineering. Similar to most doctors getting into field because they "love to help people". Many moves from technical to supervisor are rational decision. Who wants to continue doing something they su-k at? It's an easy choice since it comes with a raise. There might be a correlation between school-ranking/class-standing and how high your get in an organization.

Yes nailed it! The protect/sponsorship of the bought workers and supers is overwhelming in IT. You can care through the roof, you can actually work double digit hours. If your not sponsored or part of the “side conversations” your stuck. A coworker of mine has gotten excellent 2 years in a row with different representatives? How is that possible. That’s the immediate super being biased.

Nailed it!
These incompetent managers also dislike worker bees with real skills and they bully and diminish them with positional power and nobody dares to go against them. I saw this all the time. Ever since COVID, XOM managers are overpowered with the we-ponized NSI and work bees lost their job security
