The Company's position (ot lack thereof) on unemployment eligibility is stated in a FAQ.

VZ fought unemployment claims and won from people trying to claim unemployment as it was a voluntary separation... not sure what states they were successful in...

In Maryland. SEVERANCE PAY
If you received or will receive severance pay, dismissal pay, [or] wages in lieu of notice, you will not receive UI benefit payments until your severance/dismissal pay is exhausted.

Severance payments are deductible from UI benefits based on the number of weeks of your regular wage that they cover. Once your severance payments are exhausted, if you are otherwise eligible, your benefits may be paid.

I love the guy claiming this is greedy. Probably the same dude who downvoted similar supporting comments in another thread. Help me understand why it's greedy to take advantage of an insurance benefit you have paid into for YEARS. Severance and unemployment insurance/benefits are two very different things; severance is not intended to replace unemployment benefits in any legal or informal sense. Grow up.

Read the last paragraph regarding voluntary separation packages. Not disqualified in MA.

I think the implication is that if not enough people take the package, they have to give severance to others anyway. When they did similar to our group on the consumer end, we qualified for unemployment. Not sure how they're doing it now.

It depends on the state. Many states look at this as a voluntary action (like quitting) and deny unemployment. Check your own state's rules.

It's not a "disguised" RIF, you have to volunteer in order to be let go/become unemployed. No different than quitting. Good luck trying to collect unemployment after volunteering to leave.

Vsp is not acceptable as a reason to deny unemployment benefits as it’s basically a disguised RIF, that is the federal law which supersedes state law in labor decisions

It's "voluntary" so no, you cannot collect unemployment
