Thread regarding Ford layoffs

How have some 35 year olds reached ranks of Chief Engineer?

I see some folks who were GSR and then promoted to LL+ every 2 years. They just have a bachelors and just sound authoritative.

What are they doing right? What should I focus on for a successful career?

We had a chief engineer years ago that gave a presentation on some flavor of the day initiative at WHQ. She was not able to name the vehicle that was sitting on the stage next to her. True story,

Back years ago the VP of powertrain had to be schooled on GTDI and the benefits before a press conference. What does that tell you? It’s who you know or DEI.

Lots of Nepotism and bias in hiring/promotional decisions. Happens in downtown Detroit too.

Anyone can have this; need to be prepared however to erase any personal identity you have; ergo “sell your soul.” Remember this: because it is that easy, there are many people who do the same thing. You compete with them. Only 1 out of 100 (this being generous, maybe 1 out of 1000) who do this will actually have something to show for it. The other 99 are hollow people who hold much contempt. Not forgetting all the personal failures these individuals have (infidelity, divorce, financial distress to run with that club, ie need the big house in West Bloomfield, fancy car, etc.). I would rather not sell my soul for a 1 in 100 chance for a title. I don’t want my job to define me.

I was a naive young engineer always thinking the best of my peers and management.

Come to find out lots of screwing around on the sidelines. Wrecked marriages and office affairs you name it.

I did my job and flew under the radar for 33 yrs and have moved into retirement. Only once in my career did I think about the management path. Being an engineer was just fine. Too bad that appears to be screwed up too.

Spoken like a true Gen Z. Lookup JD Power quality & reliability reports over time. Learn something.

This is hilarious cope. Ford has made low quality vehicles for decades. If you think this pattern of failure is recent, you are lying to yourself.

That is simple. Ford's management had been quite stagnant for many years. Many of these people had been promoted rapidly many years ago. Ford has been brooming out older management for the last 5 years. They also have been brooming out older senior engineers. This opened the door for many young people to take their place. As for all of you folks in your late 40s who have had firmly entrenched management blocking your path, excited to finally see openings - sorry, you have been passed over - especially if you hired in under the pension and health benefits. Better exceed those objectives and maybe you will make it to 55.

I worked with L.D. I think before she was even LL6. People who I respect the opinion of who worked with her a lot more than me told me she is a terrible person.

A lot of the promotion is DEI religion and what school you went to, how you play the games, who is "mentoring" you, who you know, who you.... rhymes with know,

Corporations promote psychopathic and sociopathic behavior, and they often promote psychopaths and sociopaths... google corporations as psychopaths or you can maybe even find a book about it somewhere after the psychopaths who run the world shut down the internet.

chief engineer at 35 years old is nothing new...how about executive director at 35? look up all the guys under DF and you will see a bunch of immature start uppers in those positions making bad decisions lacking leadership skills and life experience.

Is it just a coincidence that quality has taken a rapid downturn since this kind of stuff has become noticeable? Sadly, much of this is fueled by DEI and the rest is fueled by the attitude that all FCGs and college grads are worth their weight in gold. Neither are remotely true.
