Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Here's what's next

I'm the OP who wrote "Mark Your Calendar" [https://www.thelayoff.com/t/1qcu4mX0]. I wrote that scenario 28 days ago. How did I do?

Here's what I think is next. We'll see if I'm right:

  • 25% staff reduction within the next 6 months. IT will be gutted, and well as business/marketing departments.
  • Re-organization of all business units at GM.
  • Many EV programs cut, as well as some ICE programs.
  • Collaboration with a Japanese or South Korean automaker for small & midsize cars. They made be pre-manufactured in China (but probably in S.K.), cutting out the UAW. But not designed or manufactured by anyone in America at General Motors.
  • Autonomous "Cruise" project silently rolled back.
  • More plant closings; moved to Mexico, followed by a UAW tantrum.
  • Talk of 5 day work weeks. "All hands on deck" Some group managers will pressure their teams to do this, even when others are not. This happens within the next month or two.
  • All of this will be marketed to employees as "Transformation" for survival!
  • GM stock will continue to tank and many will call for MB to resign. But many others will say, "MB has achieved the greatest profits in GM's history. Give her plan a chance."
  • MB will not take responsibility for Cruise or EV program cuts.
  • Talk of PAY CUTS.
  • This is a big one: Upper management will push EVERYONE to train AI, saying that it will help them be more productive but they will be training AI to eliminate their jobs. Your AI training effort will be tracked by your manager and will be a "goals" line item in your employee review.
  • Bonuses are off the table for 5 years. Yes, I'm saying that GM will be in the red for years and the cuts will not be enough.
  • People will talk about the "Transformation" for years an an epic, miserable mistake that ruined GM.

Crawling in my skin
These wounds, they will not heal
Fear is how I fall
Confusing what is real!

You remind me of this song.

But seriously…

Really man/woman: Just go get another job. Either you change or GM changes and GM ain’t gonna change. Best of luck.

Group hug is scheduled in court area across from Cole Starbucks, (first floor) tomorrow at 10am. Wear a blue shirt or sweater for "Team GM" so we know who you are.

We'll have a second-round group hug at 1:00pm for those who missed it due to meetings.
I can't wait to meet you all!

What's next for GM is record profits, hand over fist, year after year, for as long as the fullsize V8 gas powered pickup truck is the marketplace king.

"No one will be able to transform GM."

If the transformation is a top to bottom reorganization, plant closings, programs being cancelled, pay cuts, a five day work week and a 25% staff reduction... the "resistance to change" will not matter, will it?

So many salty people here with no alternative ideas. Just insults. I honestly expected more, so this is as interesting as it is disappointing. I suspect many of the saltiest, angriest people will be a part of the 25% cut. They are so angry, yet so afraid that they troll a layoff board. I hope it works out for them because McDonalds is replacing humans with AI and robots.

No one will be able to transform GM.

Too many people around who'll say, "I've been using this Excel spreadsheet for 20 years and it works fine and I ain't changing."

Too much resistance to change.

I bet the OP is a manager who is trolling us. Spreading misinformation to see what we say.

GM should be commended for its support of the best buddies program. It has granted so many opportunities to people like OP. I'm not sure they grant awards, but I applaud GM for the effort.

Clarification on the bonuses. "Bonuses are off the table for 5 years."
I meant after this year of course. I believe 2024 sales will not be strong enough for a 2025 bonus and this will continue for 5 years.
I also believe that we will hear about some of the program cuts and possibly see the first round of layoffs before the March 1 "team GM" payouts.

There are a lot of IT staff threatening to quit after March 1 (over RTO; see Reddit). I believe many of them know that the new Apple management will be replacing many of them with colleagues from big tech.
Another interesting thing about the IT staff: If they poach people from Silicon Valley, they are going to have to hike their pay significantly. Their remote status and higher pay will cause further resentment.
I don't believe they will ever successfully transform a manufacturing company born in 1908 into a "tech company" by removing Apple Play and replacing it with a pay-to-play console display.
To the people posting nasty comments, go troll your mamma. This is a conversation for adults.

Denial
psychology : a defense mechanism in which confrontation with a personal problem or with reality is avoided by denying the existence of the problem or reality

Those with nasty things to say are likely to have a great time in 2024. :)
To the two people who actually had insightful comments, kudos. Apparently, critical thinking is in short supply which speaks to the big cuts we are going to see in the following months.

It was more of a scenario than a prediction.

They need to cut back on partnerships with China. They're just training their competitors.

And if there are hostilities with China they won't be able to get parts or products anyway. Any investment will be lost.

All of this seem plausible, but your timeline is way too aggressive IMO.

But yeah, fundamentally, much of the Big 3 has way too much administrative/operational fat given the sharp decline in their market share and auto sales volume.
