Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Laid off in June'23, no real interviews so far

I apply and apply, it's only the recruiters who want to talk to me. I don't have a company reach out to me yet. I am very worried.

Try getting the he-l out of SE Michigan. There are much better places to live.

Jobs are being outsourced, replaced by AI, etc.

a lot of places are only doing contract to hire, it might not be a bad thing if contract-house-youve-never-heard-of.com is reaching out to you

I got laid off last year in April 2022 and was able to get interviews and get hired at another company within weeks. I updated my resume and applied again this year and haven't heard back anywhere else. It is tougher to find a job this year compared to last year.

@vqa+1nGqPWMf I'd consider myself a more than decent engineer, but I don't work with suppliers or vendors every day. I have only applied to a dozen jobs so far, got a couple of interviews, but I haven't received an offer yet. Yes, I am still working at Ford, yes, I am being "picky" with my applications and no, I am not in a rush because I still have a job.

However, I see few job postings and many applicants for each of them. Unless you are extremely good, or as in the case of @low+1nGqPWMf, known by the suppliers, you are just part of the applicants pool, with no "special treatment". At this point is kind of luck, more than anything else.

@OP. Don't despair and keep trying. Use your network as well. I hope you have a good rainy fund (just in case), and be frugal with it.

The problem. For every decent engineer who has a technical skill set, there are 10+ non-value adding---- whose major skill set is setting up meetings or asking "are you done yet". I would estimate 80% of LL6s have no skill set other than saying "yes" , barely knowing the widgets they are responsible for. The supply base knows the good engineers from the dead wood. Guessing the deadwood are the ones posting the market is bad.

I reached out to all the recruiters I've previously worked with. They've got little to nothing. When they do get something it's gone instantly. I've not been laid off - yet. Our team was reorganized and our LL was impacted. Our new LL is old school super silo - that's not good for anyone. That will not help anyone get a job after the next rounds of layoffs. I know a few HR people who won't hire people who've spent a long time at Ford and GM. We're so siloed and use all these weird internal processes - we're not well rounded.

There are jobs out there. Just keep applying. It could be because of your skillset or resume is not having enough key words. If you are a US Citizen and can get security clearance, checkout in defence space.

I was let go in the recent purge. I was a good engineer, not a tracker or bean counter. Respected by the supplier base. I've had 5 interviews and three offers. A small bidding war.

100% true. Across all industries there is a hiring freeze. You know how Ford got that $9B loan from the DOE? They did similar things before the Great Recession. Except this time we may be entering the second Great Depression. Housing sector is dead (I don’t care how much the houses are listing for, they are not moving). This is the first domino to fall to take out other dominos like automotive, consumer goods (you ever think bed bath and beyond would be gone 10 years ago?). Even companies like Amazon will not be immune from this. The whole economy is going down, expect the worst to happen after Labor Day (when all the snakes return to WallStreet from their summer mansions in the Hamptons).

@nen,

"* It's tough out there. Mainly due to overreaction. Things should be better by year's end. *"

Overreaction? Should be? You must be still employed.

@OP

Even the recruiters tell me they have nothing. This is hopeless, and insult to injury most of the "job postings" are fake.
