Thread regarding Medtronic Inc. layoffs

Is this the worst handling of cuts in this company?

I haven't been here for a long time, but I heard from several colleagues that such badly handled cuts have never been seen in this company.

I think the worst layoff at Medtronic was when they called all of IT to two different conference rooms at Mounds View. One room was 'safe', the other room was told they are getting laid off. We 'safe' people were told to go back to your desks and to not talk to anyone and try to not leave your desk for the rest of the day because other people were being laid off. Then the meetings ended at the same time. What a HUGE mistake on their part and how horrible.

Post ID: @OP+1mgSS5Gt - Medtronic has always executed layoff poorly. Prior to pandemic, they brought in bunch of beefed-up security people to manage few Nerdy scientists knowing full well none of these boys would make any noise. To my recollections of these scientists already had next gig lined up even before severance letter ink was dry.
Some stupid decisions all the time.

Which layoff process do you prefer, the one without any warning and severance or the one from MDT?

@ljj+1mgSS5Gt Whether you quit, laid off, fired for cause, or drop dead of frustration from working under an id--t CEO, you’re owed your accrued PTO and entitled to perpetual access to your own 401(k) contributions and vested employer contributions. Benefits could be cut at end of month, but COBRA access is required by law.

Doing more than the bare minimum required by law does not make this any less of a mismanaged disaster

@ljj+1mgSS5Gt Of the final 3 things you mentioned, only “treating you like dirt” is legal. Is that the bar we’re setting for Medtronic to clear? “Hey, at least we didn’t break the law!” (Except of course for the whole WARN loophole)

This entire process has been a sh-t-show, and it’s not over yet

The pre-written script they read specifically states you are being let go due to inflation, foreign currency exchange rates, and low revenue growth tied to those market levers. Yet, some departments kept open headcount into fy24 over retention of employees. The company wants lower wage entry level folks.

I have seen worse handling of layoffs from other companies in the twin cities (Minnesota). People were laid off without any warnings and severance. HR calls you into their office to inform you and walk you out instantly. All benefits are immediately terminated. They do pay for unused PTOs and allow you to access your 401K account. Essentially, they treat you like dirt.

This is the 7th layoff I have been a part of and is the worst of them all, by a mile.

No layoff is a good one but transparency, communication and empathy go a long way. None of them have been shown this time around.

It's almost like they said, how can we make this experience even worse than it already is? How can we guarantee we become the most hated ExCom team and CEO in this company's history? How can we cripple the company completely? That's the strategy they seem to be executing right now.

I’ve never been laid off before (until this week) but I can’t imagine it being handled much worse. Everything from zero empathy from my manager in a 15 minute call, receiving someone else’s severance package letter, so much frustration trying to return equipment and no answers from HR how I will make sure my PTO gets cancelled for next week… I feel like they are truly doing the least. I hope everyone leaves.
