Thread regarding Medtronic Inc. layoffs

These layoffs should not be taken personally

I'm hoping for the best, although I'm mentally preparing to hear that I'm no longer needed here. It is a big disappointment to give your best for many years and then get laid off in the end. However, I realized that these layoffs should not be taken personally at all.

My opinion is that there is not much logic in all of this because if there was, some of the best employees would not have been laid off.

I was part of the RIF last year. While I understand that people take it personally, this is a choice you’re making. If you take it personally, this will impact your ability to get a new job.
You are worthy, you do add value and walk away with your head held high.
Don’t let this define you.

I think the point OP was trying to make is that the layoffs isn't a result of something you did or didn't do. In most cases, it seems to be a lack of understanding by someone way above and sometimes outside of your org making the decision. Although it feels personal, it very much is superficial numbers game and has nothing to do with your performance or value. You are valuable and someone will be probably be willing to pay you more for your service after all.

When you get laid off, you absolutely do take it personally and the decision is made somewhat personally. In my function they had a choice to keep 1 of 2 Directors. You cannot tell me they didn’t think through personal relationships before choosing which director to lay off. Also, show some respect for the people in this forum who have lost their job. Medtronic lost a lot of great talent due to Geoff Martha and the LT failures.

Well said. These layoffs aren’t personal. They would be personal if it weren’t my boss’s boss’s boss giving me the news.

@ees How is OP woke? Time to turn off Fox News and go to bed, grandpa.

I think part of the issue of these layoffs is that they are impersonal. It would have been nice if they had the common courtesy to give us some clarity on how they would (and will) unfold. Instead they are seemingly at random, with performers of all productivity levels being let go. And still no word from GM on how many, timeframe, etc. It’s a mess.

Woke non-laid off id--t is telling laid off people that it's not personal.

Great epiphany buddy...0/10 on the timing though.

Getting laid off is personal, maybe not against your immediate management, but it is personal. Get laid off and let us all know that you don't take it personally... SMH
