Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Life after suffering at exxon.

Well I stayed way too long at exxon. Now I am working at a place where my work is valued and I am not being told I constantly need to improve. I do my engineering work and design work for this new company and get paid well. I keep feeling like the manager is going to berate me and tell me I am not doing a good job. I also keep wondering if my co workers are going to back stab me. None of this is happening at my new company. It could be because the company is small and they need experienced engineers like me. They allow me to do a good job and leave me alone. I can proposed new ideas and they are not shot down, Instead new ideas are welcomed and implemented. There is also no push to work more than 40 hours per week. I do a little extra because it is a nice environment to work at. I feel like I am suffering from PSTD because of the toxic workplace at exxon. It takes a while to get used to a healthy workplace. I have been away from exxon for 2 years and it feels so good to be away from all the horrible people and toxicity.

@OP OP says he has PTSD from years of working at Exxon, and then posts comments on this site 2 years after leaving. Calling complete BS on that. The closest he got to working at the company is when he pumps gas at their stations.

In a similar position, in that I'd been with Exxon for >15 years and left recently. I'm so happy to be out of such a toxic environment. Life after Exxon is great, much less stress, more collaborative work environment, rewarding work. If I knew the direction the company would be heading, I would have left earlier. I kept hoping the opportunities would grow at Exxon, but opportunities for growth kept shrinking and things got more toxic while the company was making more money than ever.

If you're on the fence, definitely recommend exploring your options. There's life outside of Exxon and there's a lot of upside to life elsewhere.

I don’t think the divide is between elite vs state universities… it’s between workers and psychos in management (who come from all walks).

@ae Maybe the poor working culture comes from egotistical, elitist and classist id--ts like you not willing to respect merit and diversity.

ExxonMobil is right now the worst culture becuase no one talks about these things at work and just smiles while they are dying inside at work everyday.

Because we pick mediocre nobodies fromUS rural area universities to be ‘leaders’. With their lofetime of abuse and poverty they start treating their work as their escape and meaning to do ANYTHING they are asked by their ‘leaders’ who are also from such backgrounds. Hence the good ol boy clubs, and occasional female ‘leader’ to serve whatever their boss says as gospel.

Leave when you get a chance, I know you are trying just keep at it. You will regret a full life spent at EM.
