In the last few years people have been saying "learn to code," but those jobs are getting lost to AI and high tech companies have been laying off like crazy. Seems like a job with no future.

What new jobs would you suggest they try to get?

2020-2023 was a massive social experiment that is too broad for simple discussion.
But the simple outcome was this: working adults were socially engineered to accept that they can get paid to mow their lawns, binge netflix and go shopping. Now they are trapped in offices, more miserable and less engaged than in any time in history.

As AI replaces them, these people will be put out to pasture in a job market with few opportunities. When this economic bubble pops, we will enter the biggest depression in history as wars and food insecurity unfold. There will be record homelessness, starvation and class division. People think a "UBI" will arrive. It won't because the national debt is already unsustainable. The current interest on national debt is higher each year than the military budget. There's no such thing as a "free lunch". You need real output, real productivity to pay for someone's generational welfare.

Senior leadership “shipped the bed” so badly going all in on EV that it’s paralysis by analysis everywhere. Bring them what they asked for in the last meeting and they just invent more questions so they can procrastinate decision making and just hold court with you all over again next week. Meanwhile they’ve got you wasting a bunch of time investigating bad ideas and stalling your progress on the good ones.

Does GM need management if the workers are replaced by AI? Clowns can't make the connection.
GM has a complexity problem.
GM has an inefficiency problem.
AI is a bandaid at best. Replacement for all of us at the worst.

The new myth coming from managers:
AI can fix all of our problems.
Managers can force their subordinates to learn to code Python.
Employees will create AI Agents that do all of the work and sort out all of GM's inefficiencies.
The worker can then sit in their seats playing with their phones, endlessly collecting paychecks and bonuses. Full job security (we swear) and corporate profits unlocked, the manager is the hero for finally figuring it all out.

I'm not being hyperbolic or joking here.

@ft The endless meetings and inability to make decisions is because nobody in management ever takes responsibility.

If they have endless meetings to make a group decision, or make no decisions at all, no individual will ever take the fall for a bad decision.

Even though making decisions is what managers are for, and why they make the big bucks.

Once this CCP Autonomous taxi system is fully integrated in Europe, South America, etc. the system will be fully evolved. It will simply get copy/pasted into Canada & Mexico, then America's blue cities, then the rest of the US. Goodbye US, Japanese and German auto industry. Resistance to it will be labeled as xenophobic. Corporations like Lyft and Uber are so greedy that they bent over immediately. This is how it ends.

Much smaller if they haven’t been bought up by a take over hedge fund. Imo GM has always thought they know better than the customer and this time may finally get them.

They were leaders up into the later 60’s / early 70’s by a lot in the US and imo the SLT needs to realize those days are long gone and humble themselves a bit.

@bm the "Cali folks" aren't magic. They can probably help with software projects because the current GM is really bad at software, but they can't change GM's bureaucratic and old fashioned industrial corporate culture.

There's too much resistance to change from top to bottom, from Mary down to the bolt turners on the assembly line.

In a lot of ways GM still feels like a company lost in the 1950s.

Scenario 1: Still around but will look way different. Mostly controlled by Cali folks since they know how to attract VC's and create higher stock valuation and inflate market cap. They have strong ties with wall street. This company needs lots of money from VC's and retail investors too attract talented tech people and this company doesn't have either currently. That's why Mary brought all new SLT members. They will reduce workforce significantly, remaining workers will get paid similar to cali salaries with RSU's like model. Work will get shifted more and more to cali to show VC's that they have talented people to get the job done. It's all about the optics to raise money. They are in the phase of selling this vision to the VC's, so they need to take this step.

Most of the folks in Warren will be left in the dust. Those who will survive will be mostly who work on nuts and bolts physical parts of the vehicle.

Scenario 2: these over-hyped cali folks will not be able to deliver because it's a huge transformation that is not strategically easy to execute and some of the folks may get burned out during the process and leave voluntarily or involuntarily.

Bottom line: they have no choice but to go through the scenario 1 process to see how it all plays out. During this process many workers will become collateral damage unfortunately. There will be churn at the top too. My bet is they continue to play out scenario 1 because it's inevitable that if they don't pursue it they will not survive at all due to other competing threats.

Note: Mary and Mark should've been removed by the board many years ago along with many VP's and exec directors who were simply collecting their big paychecks and buying summer homes at up north. Maybe, they were the right fit up until 2005, but a total misfit after that who lacked vision and intelligence needed to remain at the top. This apples to the so-called "Big 3", not just GM. Reason why they all lasted this long is because replacing the top layer isn't easy and not the mention that the board of directors and in bed with them too. So, as always it's the worker bees who ends up getting sc--wed at the end. Now, they've run out of time and have no choice but to execute scenario 1.
