Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Is my career over with an NI?

Got my first ever NI. Still trying to process this. Been with the company 9 years and bounced between VG to O in the new system and was always among the top 1/3 in the old system. Never played politics. Just worked hard and produced tangible outcomes. Not sure why I got an NI. Is my career over at Exxon? Truthful thoughts, please.

Thanks, everyone. Happy to report that I've got a new job that is wildly better than this one!

The most important thing to remember, is that it's a popularity contest. Be more popular. If that isn't in your skillset, then go somewhere else that values your traits more.

NI and only 9 years in you are toast. Look for a new job. Too young to have a black mark like that.

Dude you are among some of the worst people in Clinton, NJ. If you are rational and talented, you will be NIed. It was long coming. Learn from the incompetent losers in materials science and others on how to survive by back stabbin.

I went from VG->G->NI->NI->VG - very supervisor dependent unfortunately

In a word, if you want to hit the lofty heights of 32+, yes

Stay <27CL until you get a supervisor job. Helps you stay out of the crosshairs if you aren't a HiPo.

first reply was from HR definitely, to damage control.

But you sound exactly like many people who are still <CL 25. It is the sweet spot where they don't want to promote you but kept dangling promotion or reward in front of you. It is a trend where they rank you well previous year and make it drop to G or NI the following year. That is how they maintain the cost by not promoting you.

The drop is gradual but inevitable with age, pay and cl. I went from excellent, to good, to N
I and finally NSI. I was told I could not compete with the young ones because of pay and expectations. I got the hint and retired at 58.

@OP what is your CL?

That su-ks. I think you have to do what you can to find out why. Did people in your group really outperform you? What is your relationship like with the other assessors and your supervisor? What’s the relationship of the others in your group like with the others?

Never playing politics I’m sad to say is what probably hurt you. You have to be your own advocate. You have to make yourself known. Your work has to be seen broadly in your group.

We’re all smart and very capable people. The difference between the CL 27 and the executive isn’t knowledge and effort, it’s the intangibles.

It’s a lot to process and reconcile in those that are dealing with this - these outcomes are an artifact of so many factors our logical and rational brains can’t make sense of. If you feel downtrodden use that energy to develop plans for something far greater than Exxon so you have options next year. Those that got O this year may likely see a similar outcome in the next few years. Hang in there - it’s a big beautiful plant full of opportunities for your intellect!

Not unrecoverable but will be a significant hurdle to continue on with career progression.

Not necessarily. I’ve seen people come back from it.

A couple of questions that would be helpful context.

What are your future career goals (e.g. if you’re wanting to be an executive, it would be tougher to recover from)?

Any feedback or context for what happened that dropped you?
