Thread regarding Chevron Phillips Chemical layoffs

Will there be a voluntary round?

Is there any chance of that happening? I know a few people who’d gladly take the package and leave. Wouldn’t it make more sense to start there? Let the ones who don’t want to be here, and are probably less productive because of it, go, and keep the ones who still want to stay.

@2qf iCare, may she rest in peace. If there weren't so many "bad actors," it might have worked. We wouldn't be here if it had. It might even have survived layoffs if our situation wasn't the logical and predictable consequence of so many bad decisions and lack of strategic vision. Someone in a post joked about JV standing for "junior varsity." That's so true. We have so many people in powerful positions that they could never get hired for at a "varsity" company. And some of these are stalwarts against innovative, creative and strategic thinking. These are the dunderheaded a*hles you can blame. I guarantee you CPChem's most incorrigible gaslighters will be pusing iCare Day again this year. They think we're all snowed, but the emperors have no clothes.

@2q7 Some survivors were told the company was in such bad shape that there likely would be more rounds of layoffs and that no one should feel "safe." It could be the first wave of layoffs got the best financial deal. It's hard for the lifers who have given the best years of their careers to CPChem. They must feel like they just fell off a cliff. The subsequent groups will be leaving a company whose culture disintegrated while they watched and HQ emptied out.

Contractors never get a package. They work as non clothes. It would be a violation of co-employment. Their work is deemed as termed employment for a set time. If they have been working this long it's only because their terms get re-extended for whatever deemed period. Contractors are typically not considered as operational expense unlessed tied to sone dort of support service. So dont feel bad for Contractors. Its the nature of what they signed up for.

@OP those who can retire, should do so. Those who can find work elsewhere, should. Good luck.

@qz There's no legal requirement that a company give severance packages to severed employees, but most do. Contractors, on the other hand, typically don't get severance packages, so if CPC is sending off contractors without a package that probably has nothing to do with how it intends to treat its severed employees.

Severance packages usually include a release of claim against the company. Some companies also don't want to stiff employees and get bad word of mouth -- they'd rather be seen as humane. In addition to genuine compassion, being humane also underscores their messaging about the business reasons for having had to make such a tough decision. It also helps with retention of the employees who are not getting laid off. Some severance packages also include resume-writing and other types of job-seeking help, which helps manage, at least a little, the shock of facing life without an income.

The companies that don't give out severance packages are often just too broke to do it.

Strings are almost always attached to severance packages. In addition to the non-disparagement and release from claims clauses, there might also be clauses preventing the severed employee from competing with CPC or sharing its proprietary info.

If you've never been laid off, here's how it feels: shock, even if theoretically you knew it was possible or likely; fear -- the terrible heart-pounding kind; rejection, humiliation and shame; anger, especially if you're not treated well during the process, and resentment. But as you take those last steps out of the building and onward into the coming days, you might also feel the euphoria of being unburdened by whatever workplace BS you've been dealing with AND, much sooner than you think, enthusiasm and hope at the prospect of inventing a new and better version of yourself. You will have learned a lot at CPC, much of it good and useful -- and you get to take that with you.

If you don't get laid off but know people who do, please reach out to them (unless they say they want to be left alone) -- take them to lunch, check on them, etc. This helps them manage the transition without feeling like pariahs.

@qy no packages this time. They are just going to send them on their way. They won't even say when the firing date is. People are already leaving and not waiting for the inevitable.

There is always a package in this industry. The company is risk averse and prefers to hand out a severance payment in exchange for a promise not to sue.

@ej Yes, apparently they don't like their dirty laundry aired out. They now feel the entire 5000 employees hate their guts and won't be doing anything packaged. They have decided to not care, by choice

So for the stupid ribbon cutting they let Mari Cello cut the ribbon? Really?! After all of the cr-p that has come about her shady doings - why not let can’t field help her? Would have been a PERFECT in your face to the employees- doesn’t matter what they do- they are invincible! What a bunch of BS

You are correct. No packages. Contractors are being let go as we speak. More to follow soon.
