Thread regarding ViacomCBS layoffs

I’m on the fence about whether I’d like to be laid off or not

The job market is horrid. Yet this place has become so unbearable that I would probably feel relieved if I were laid off this round. My job has become exceptionally stressful over the past two years for all kinds of reasons, including ending up with a toxic team and a clueless manager. I also wouldn’t wish the anxiety and tension of the last round of layoffs on my worst enemy. Losing this job might actually do wonders for my well-being at this point.

@gv I didn’t say VP “and above.” Please don’t claim my post is inaccurate — unlike many here speculating, I’m speaking from direct experience.

A former VP was laid off after ~15 years with the company. All I’ll say is that they received significantly less than a year. Hope that helps clarify things.

@gv that’s right and some vps have contracts (usually 2 years for vp and longer for svp evp)

@dx this isn’t accurate. A VP and above doesn’t need to be at the company for that period of time.

I want to add my thoughts to this thread... I am lucky that my immediate team is great and we have a good working relationship. However, it has been very difficult to keep our motivation in our work when our morale has plummeted about these layoffs and the secretive method that they use to announce impacted employees. I have never worked for a company that sends out layoff emails to employees that will be let go. Who does that!?! I am trying to maintain my composure to continue being an informal leader for the team because I respect the people. I believe that corporate managers (not leaders) could learn a lot by seeing what we really do and how we do it. We are the front soldiers that keep the P+ applications streaming but unfortunately that also makes us cannon fodder.

@dx plenty got a year in the August layoff with under 25 years.

@a1 Unless you’ve been with the company for 25+ years, you are not getting 1 year of severance as a VP.

That’s not an isolated opinion. It’s a weird place to be in to root for your own release.

Life is life. At-will jobs don’t guarantee paychecks, and only a few get golden parachutes. Real life isn’t just meetings and JIRA tickets with rainbows and unicorns too.

Continuing to perform at your best when under constant threat of being laid off is nothing short of psychological torture. Add in not knowing if the next round (because there’s always a next round) will provide appropriate severance or not makes it worse. The humane thing to do would be to offer people the opportunity to leave with severance. But this place has never prioritized mental health despite their performative efforts.

This is where I’m at. Not only would it be somewhat relieving, but we don’t know how SD will treat severance.

I felt the exact same way. But I think it really helped my mental health to be let go, even if the job market is terrible and I’m just finishing up my severence. I can’t believe the amount of anxiety/dread/stress I was experiencing during my time at PAR.
