Thread regarding Ford layoffs

RTO, campus rennovation, & the train station...

Hey everybody,

I am a recent college grad that just joined as an FCG and I don't live in Michigan. Despite starting fully remote, my manager said I should eventually consider relocating but that our team is going to stay remote until further notice.

I know pre-COVID, Ford was focused on a huge campus rennovation and overhauling Michigan Central. I have seen it mentioned both on this forum as well as on my team that the building previously used doesn't exist anymore.

My question is does anyone have any idea what plans are in the works in regard to RTO and what teams will go where? Some people started rumors that we'd hear about it this month sometime, but 99% of what gets posted here is pure speculative horsesh-t. Curious what some more senior IT employees here think will happen.

I'm stuck in limbo waiting for people to decide if I should relocate or not and where I should live (considering where I may end up is going to change at the end of my rotation). I don't mind being in office, but I don't see the point is uprooting my life and moving if I am going to just continue to work remotely.

@2tly+1iGpTzMF agreed on mich ave. from the dearborn border until you get to the corktown area...not yet gentrified i guess. the "telway hamburger system" hamburger stand looks interesting though i never stopped there. "hamburger system," now that is something an manufacturing guy could get into! if you havent driven that route, it is interesting to do, and fewer crazy drivers than i94. i am not sure what the current carjack stats are. check those first. i would recommend doing the route in your daily driver rather than your shiny new mustang convertible tho. blend in, for safety. it is where you say: dorothy we ain't in canton any more.

I work onsite. The old PDC building has gone under several renovations, and buildings 1 and 6, have gone under extensive renovations. Which building were you referring to that doesn't exist anymore?

There is trend in the industry to have people return to office. The questions are: if something happened to your job with Ford, would you be able to find another remote job? Would you be able to find another job outside of the automotive field?

Oh yeah, I wanna work in the old train station that Maty Maroun let go to sh/t before finding a su---r to buy it. Nothing like having to commute into the depths of Detroit just to have to pay for parking and pay city income taxes to the crooks there. Or skip the commute time and pay double the tax to live in the midsts of that fine crime ridden city. How many times have you driven from near the end of Mich Ave at Woodward out to Telegraph or farther after midnight? Try it half dozen times and you'll feel the novelty of working at the old train station dissolve away.

Usually the relocation policy for FCGs has a 12 month clock on it. If you wait beyond that the cost of the move is yours.
Also consider the WFH policy, if you are considered fully remote or hybrid. If your position is officially fully remote then you can not be asked to show up. Usually FCGs are considered hybrid even if they don't report to work (but probably depends on skill team) Hybrid workers can be asked to be at the offices for site dependent work. Don't believe people on what they think you are considered, check your location code in the system. Also talk to your FCG leads for more reliable information than on this random forum full of trolls.

A big reason I joined Ford was I believed I would be working in the Michigan Central station, but I guess that isn’t happening anytime soon?

Find a new job. This company is a lost cause.

If you team is remote for now, don't relocate unless you want to. As a FCG, it is hard to say where you will end up at Ford. Some areas will stay remote forever. Others teams will need to be in person. If you want to advance, you may need to relocate but you don't need to make that decision yet.

I suggest you keep an open mind but stay where you are for now. There is no point in moving until you completely know the plan for RTO. Many people are fully remote from outside SE MI. Even if they ask people to come into the office sooner rather than later, you were still hired fully remote. Wait until the RTO work dust settles and then make your decision.

The only thing consistent with Ford is change. I had a manager move up from down south, only to have his job title and R&R change 3 weeks after coming up to Dearborn. Frustrated, he then turned out to be a cr---y manager to the rest of us. Quit after a year and went back down south.

Whether you love or hate something at Ford, just wait. It'll change.

Welcome to the world of Ford. You will NEVER know what to do! Don't relocate!

If you go through with this, make sure you show up to work in a Ford product. And whatever you do, don't drive an import.

Are they even going to offer you a full relocation- that policy sounds dead? I can't imagine a scenario in which this a fews days per week drive to Dearborn (or wherever) adds value other than to fill empty chairs and help Ford justify this multi billion dollar campus transformation investment. Remember that you'll end up "hot desking" it when you arrive on any given day, so you could conceivably be away from your teammates and have to call into WebEx meetings to include those from Mexico and everywhere else they've outsourced these jobs. Not to mention those that are WFH that day. So you're essentially driving in to attend WebEx meetings you could have supported from home and be distracted in this open office environment. Do you really want to be stuck in SE MI if and when you get cut? Maybe more so when... Don't get complacent with a 100% WFH status either because they can revoke that without notice.

So your manager telling you to consider relocating to Dearborn really means that if you don’t relocate you will get fired. Even if you relocate you could still get fired. If I was you, use this time to find another job and stay in your current city as it sounds like that is where your friends and family are from.

Take this as an opportunity to try for better jobs instead of worrying about relocating here. It is not worth relocating for this job.

I look at it like this....there is no way Ford is paying all that $$$ for all these new/renovated buildings and parking garages to keep them collecting dust while most of us work from home. Eventually we will be working in the office more time per week than from home. WFH will not go away though (especially if the political class gets a new virus to latch onto, monkey pox didn't fly this summer but something new will come up).

Now, going back to office is still a long way from reality as Dearborn campus is a disaster area still under major construction.

But to answer your question, if you stay with Ford, in about 2 years (maybe less) you will be expected to be in person in an office 3 days per week.
