Should i take counter offer?

Tendered my resignation letter last week and the manager gave me a counter offer - 30% higher salary and a move to a better job assignment with greener prospect with immediate effect.

Should I take the counter offer or is this a trap?

Total bs they will be happy to see you go.no counter offers they will hire someone at half your pay or an Indian at one quarter pay. I have not seen any one make this happen at exxon. Pure fantasy.

As a general rule, you should turn down counter-offers.

Question: why do so many people here feel compelled to make up these types of stories? Is it a means of coping because most of you know that you can’t do better than Exxon?

The answer to your story is, "absolutely not". Anyone who has been in the real world knows thats a career ki---r and makes no sense. You should make your arguments with your management regarding career advancement first and then make a decision. Once made , dont look back. However, EM doesn't remotely go along with normal real world career advancement. It's a one way street. They'll reluctantly hire experienced hires to fill specific gaps in individual contributor roles and thats it. Cases like our new CFO are rare. They would never ever try to retain anyone after the fact. They also know it's bad business practice.

I worked 35 years before retiring from EM. I saw a lot of stuff during that period but I've never heard of a counter offer being given. Sometimes EM will rehire a former employee; but; never heard of a 'counter offer'.
