Thread regarding GlobalFoundries layoffs

accepting offer at competitor

I've accepted an offer with a competitor, but gave them a start date 8 weeks from now so I can train peers, move and settle into housing for my family. Is it true that GF instantly terminates your employment if you go to certain companies? If so, which (TSMC, Intel, Samsung???)? Do you get severance (2 weeks) and vacation payout? I can't find anything on the HR website, surprisingly (or not)

It is a small world …. But it is GF…. Most industry knows how toxic/bad they are….. GF isn’t very respected… and it’s a 2 way street…. If your mgt threatens you or actually does speak negatively about you … and then one day they are moving on… they too can be hit by same weapons they threaten you with…in fact it looks worse on them …. So yes small world - but GF has no leverage or respect in this world

To OP - agree with "Do not say a word ...". And why would you?
SEMI companies "Offering Huge Bonuses to Fight Tech Brain Drain" - the employees are in the driver seat for first time in XXI Century. Just one example - Samsung (btw, expanding in TX): "When you factor in the 11-month bonus, employees are looking at yearly compensation of roughly $203,000".

I have heard 2 stories where gf mgt contacted the new place to give a bad review of employee. And one of these stories I confirmed with the person who left. Very unprofessional on gf mgt part. It also made them look foolish. The new place apparently was like uh ok wtf why are u reaching out to us?? Made gf look like it’s run and led by amateur clowns.

Best bet don’t say a word. Give your notice and that’s it - avoid and eliminate any chance of happening

my ex manager keep confirm with me that I am not joining those competitors, and yes, she told me that if I am joining them my employment will be terminated directly . There is a competitor list when you go through the system.

Do not say a word to anyone that you cannot trust that will not talk. Let's face it, very few people will keep their mouths shut so honestly... keep it quiet until you are on the last few days.
If you have a good upline they might be willing to work it out with you but you better have one he-l of a good relationship with them.
It is policy to let people go if they are leaving for a competitor.
You will only be paid vacation. No sick, no holiday pay will be paid out.
My advice: Loose lips sink ships. Give your silent service and leave in grace.

I think it totally depends on the group. I would not mention until the last day where you are going. In addition to the reasons mentioned above GF overall has a toxic retaliation culture and they find some stupid reasons to walk you out asap.

Employment at will means anyone can terminate employment either employer or employee.

If you send resignation you are not eligible for severance pay.

It happened once for me after sending resignation my access was removed unable to login to email, vpn etc.,

HR called me and said you are terminated today since you resigned not eligible for severence.

Better not to tell company while resignation. If you tell competitor any company ask you to send resignation letter(voluntary so no severance) and
If you access to sensitive data they will terminate you immediately.

I understand your good intentions and have seen many cases they terminate immediately

I think it is group dependent. I know colleagues, in my department, that went to competitors, and stayed the two weeks to a month beyond their resignation letter. The immediate walk-out just proves how toxic that group is.

They don't frequently counter offers. They don't have to pay you a full two week and if you leave in middle can prorate it. They just can't pay you less than a full day so if you leave after a half hour on a given day you'll be paid the full day. You will have health insurance full month though if you tell them first day of a given month

thanks. To be honest I didn't think it was that absurd to receive two weeks of pay if terminated on that basis. Seems better to tell them at the start of a pay period since they can't prorate exempt employee's pay (must be a full paycheck from what I recall since you aren't paid by hours worked).

I actually like most of my coworkers and don't want to leave them in a bind. Ideally I'd give 4-6 weeks notice, but not going to risk losing health insurance and missing out on a few paychecks. I'll give my notice, but not say where I'm going. Does anyone know how they counter offers? Do they need a copy of the competing offer?

If you're going to a direct competitor they will walk you on the day you give notice unless you are holding some absolutely critical knowledge that needs transferred before you go.
Absolutely, positively no severance. Are you joking? Nobody who gives notice gets severance.
You will be paid through the the last date they allow you to work, and for any accrued PTO. Period.

Don't tell them until two weeks before and expect to be escorted off but it's not definite got will. You will get paid for unused vacation, no severance. No pay for unused sick time or floating holidays
