Today I learned about an unofficial process of ‘fast placement.’ This seems to be supported by HR. It’s very concerning that someone is allowed to cherry pick a relatively senior person from one organization and move that person to fill a similar role in another line of business without posting. For example, we need a new head of a Center of Excellence for a Wholesale function. Instead of posting, the hiring manager calls up the other COEs for that same function in the company and asks if they have anyone ready to step into an expanded role. This bypasses any formal recruiting efforts and prevents qualified people in that group from being able to post. And before you say anything.. I’m so sick of “centers of excellence.’ Jargon. It’s all BS. Since HR seems to support this process, filing a formal complaint will be career ending.

If I’m placed somewhere I’m needed, with good pay and something I’m good at, by all means place me. I’d much rather see talent retained (when deserving) than someone to get fired. #teamWells
This is common practice In every bank that I’ve worked at. Probably also for any major corporation. Job posting is really for clerical and first line supervisors. After that if you’re marked for a serious career track you float above the HR processes. If you’re not marked for that, you can still move jobs and move up but really have to fight the process and hope that nobody is slated for it. You definitely do not have same job opportunities.
- It’s not illegal
- The rules are for the plebe, not SVP on up, then it’s relationships, cronyism and nepotism
There is nothing illegal about putting people into roles without posting. It might be ‘unfair’ but not illegal.
Whether it was called ‘fast placement' or not, this has been going on for years. One post mentioned 'illegal.' Like WF cares about illegal?
Moves like that are actually illegal, even if they already have someone for the position. They must by law post the job internally, the externally. So if this is happening and you want to report it, report it in writing to WF HR, then report it it to the EEOC (I believe you can report this to the OCC as well). Reporting anything to Wells Fargo HR will mean you will have a target on your back and they will try to push you out. Remember, the OCC's leaked report stated that WF HR did not investigate 3,000+ employees complaints. HR is only out for the company's interest, not yours.
From my experience at the company I can definitely see why Wells Fargo is having a hard time with turnover of young professionals and why their cost in legal is high each quarter. Inexperienced management and poor leadership is sinking the company.
Yea the fake openings wastes everyones time. They should stop doing this.
I’m okay with it also. Better than interviewing a bunch of people who have no chance because it’s already been decided the manager’s drinking buddy is getting the job.
I'm actually okay with this. Maybe there's already a working relationship established with an individual and this person is a "known quantity' and a perfect fit for the position. Why waste precious time, effort and valuable resources by posting it, reviewing applicants, conducting interviews and so on when you already have the right person? It's just unnecessary overhead at a time when cost savings are paramount. Now, if you're not sure it's a perfect fit, then go through the standard process, of course.
I hope I don’t actually work with half of the people that replied to this thread
Filing a formal complaint in good faith should not be career ending, but not all roles have to be openly posted without violating HR policy or law.
Probably some diversity moved into those roles since the new leader that was hired to lead that charge has his incentive tied to it.
@1ovg - any complaint to employee relations or ethics line, they will find out who you are and find a way to get rid of you. Seen it many times.
As you said, filing a formal complaint would be career ending. So just keep your mouth shut , don’t roll out the victim card, and forget about it and move on.
