Thread regarding GlobalFoundries layoffs

10nm and below market share growing

10nm and below technologies are expected to be close to 30% by YE 2024 of the overall semi market and it is growing by about 4-5% per year. By 3030 if the trend continues then 10nm and below could be over 50% of the market share. If one is stuck in 12nm and larger nodes there is no room for growth, it is just about survival and maintaining your revenue best case. Reality is GF doesn't have a 12nm competitive technology so really we are playing in the 22nm and larger nodes. Unless GF gets a competitive 12nm and a 10nm/7nm/5nm offerings the revenue growth for the future looks dismal. Time to put up the for-sale sign again and hope Intel buys us.

@9xrk, the main increases are in advanced nodes. The older nodes like 22nm and below it is a dog fight on supply exceeding demand currently (even worse in 200mm nodes like 130nm/180nm) and the overall prices are not rising significantly. Revenue growth long term needs to come from either making more differentiated technologies or shrinking technologies which GF is currently doing neither of currently.

Also a lot of other companies are moving there(Bulgaria, Bangalore, India, etc … it’s giving the work force in these countries many more options and guess what?? GF su-ks there too. Over past year many have left. Guys we trained up to find better more lucrative work. Good for them I say, but what a pain in the a-s for us. Now we gotta train up some new guy from scratch only for them to bail after a year or two.

3030!!! Proofreading is obviously a lost art. It is a direct reflection (in most of these GF Layoff comments) about the quality of workmanship. Reading, writing, and the overall comprehension of our own native English language in the USA is not a requirement to be a GF employee in the USA. Warm bodies paid slave wages, and shifting employment to Bangalore work really well though if you live at home with your parents. /s

Im so grateful my happiness and job security is no longer dependent on GF. Globalfoundries will fail, and I will celebrate.
