Thread regarding AIG (American Intl Group Inc.) layoffs

How do they let you know you are laid off?

Is there any pattern to watch for? Monday morning meeting? Friday afternoon? Is there anything I can watch for to see if I am part of a layoff?

Post ID: @8jy+1vtFfWDZ Employers use and are hoping that you'll be so embarrassed that you will Not tell your co-workers that you got Laidoff/Fired or what they did.
Do the opposite and air out their Dirty Laundry!

Post ID: @8jy+1vtFfWDZ Turn the beat around and use it to your advantage instead of feeling humiliated.
Why do you think Companies try to keep Firings and Layoffs as hush hush as possible?? It's just as embarrassing for the Employer as it is for the Employees because Employees will start to wonder& gossip about what's Dysfunctional in the Company & why. Firings and Layoffs sow fear, distrust & Low Morale.
Employees start to think if it can happen to one or a few persons it can happen to them. The remaining Employees may start job hunting to protect themselves.
When it happened to me I made sure I told anyone & everyone around me the details, what was happening while I packed my belongings. I talked loudly & amongst the other things I said, I made sure I repeated "I got Fired." several times.
You better believe my manager and the HR Bozo who was assigned to watch me pack my belongings looked so uncomfortable & were in disbelief that I was announcing the details of my Firing to the world.
You may as well control the narrative yourself instead of allowing the Motherfvcken A$sholes to do it !
Also bad news travels fast. You WANT to sow fear, distrust and Low Morale in the Company that Fvcked You Over!

Post ID: @8jy+1vtFfWDZ Unfortunately most employees are unaware that they can phone the Police and file a Police Report for theft if the MotherFvckers refuse to mail you your belongings, or if you find anything missing after they shipped them to you.
This happened at Prudential Financial Insurance Company. I threatened and was ready to call the Cops & media to report theft! It wasn't until then that PruBullSh!t Polite as they're sanctimoniously fond of calling themselves finally shipped all of my personal belongings to me!!!

Post ID: @7wc+1vtFfWDZ. You are absolutely correct. Do not leave any personal belongs in your cubicle! When I was laid-off from AIG, I was at my desk when I received a call to come to HR. After being told that I was part of a staff reduction, I was escorted to my cubicle. I packed large file boxes with my belongings under the supervision of the HR manager while the office staff watched. I was repeatedly questioned whether certain articles were mine or company property. I couldn't carry the oversized boxes with me because the train station was 3/4 of a mile from the office. She reluctantly agreed to have my belongings sent to my home. Weeks went by. After repeated calls to HR, my belongings were finally sent to me, over a month later. The AIG layoff process was horrific as well as humiliating.

Post ID: @1hwi+1vtFfWDZ If you still have your own designated desk, Not hotelling desk, this is the main reason Not to keep personal items in or on your desk.
Every day, think of the desk you're using as temporary because if you're Laidoff or Fired and you have tons of personal items in or on your desk, you might Not be able to carry everything home with you on the Day you're escorted out of the building!

Post ID: @7sy+1vtFfWDZ One of my co-workers at AIG P.I.G. got Laidoff while he was on Cancer treatment medical leave. The MotherFvckers phoned him at home.

You're correct. P.I.G. will even do it via Post-It note or a Text message ! This Company is Cold, Callous, Sat@n Evil, Not merciful and Not professional !

Post ID: @1hwi+1vtFfWDZ Thank you for your post. As other posters have alluded and posted about, any meeting invite that's from HR or Legal Dept. is NEVER a good thing. Any promotions or bonus money meetings will be done by your own manager, Not HR or Legal.
Other signs to look out for include but are Not limited to your manager telling you to document your work, list your responsibilities, how to do your work/tasks, teach or show someone else how to do your job, etc..
If you're in this predicament, make sure you play d-mb, give the bare bones minimum information if anything at all, and slow walk everything as slow as molasses. You can also say something along the lines of, "I don't remember." or "I'm not sure".

I got laid off 13 yrs ago after working for aig for 28 yrs via a phone call I was home that day taking a vacation day. With this company they could lay you off with a post it note - there’s no ryhme or reason and anything is possible at anytime. I’m am glad I worked for this company during many good yrs and it was a great company at one time and was respected. I enjoy a good pension and paid secondary ins which were given Benefits that no longer exist as neither does any loyalty to the employee. From what I’ve seen in the years since leaving co., it’s worse than it’s ever been -

There are different procedures depending if the layoff involves an entire office or an individual. As it relates to an individual layoff, the only tell-tale signs are a meeting planner sent from HR or a cold call asking you to report to HR. If there is a planner, it's likely that your department manager will be included in the call notice. The HR rep might also suddenly appear at your desk asking to meet with you in a conference room. At that point, you'll be notified of your termination. The HR rep will mention that the termination is not performance related, but is due to a "business decision" to reduce staff. If there are other employees also being let go, it's possible that HR might mention this as a consolation. However, they will not identify the other employees. You will be asked to sign something to acknowledge that you were notified of the circumstances associated with the termination and the severance benefits being extended to you as well as your rights to obtain COBRA. You'll also receive written notice from HR or your senior department head formally notifying you that your services are no longer needed. If you are in the office, you will be escorted back to your desk to collect your personal items and they'll ask for your ID. Finally, you'll be escorted out of the building. If your supervisor is aware of your impending termination, she or he is not suppose to notify you in advance. Looking back, as another possible sign, I also recall that my supervisor was avoiding me earlier that day as well as the day before. As best as I can recall, this event occurred on a Tuesday or Wednesday. Another point to remember is that layoffs of more than one individual are generally done on the same day as bad news travels quickly and corporate wants to avoid the staff uneasiness that always follows. Hope this helps.

If they tell you to start making documentation of documents, your co workers are acting weird because your manager blabs about it and then on a Sunday you randomly get a 9am “Catch Up” meeting with the CFO it’s over.

Unless you’re connected to a higher up, you most likely won’t get a head’s up. But if you get an out of the blue calendar invite with a weird subject line like “Catch Up”, you’re getting laid off.
