Barra says GM employees are happy to be back in the office

Detroit — Since General Motors Co. started requiring in-office work after the pandemic, most employees have recognized the benefits and want to be there, though there is a small minority who continue to object, CEO Mary Barra told the Detroit Economic Club on Thursday.

In January, GM started requiring its salaried staff within 50 miles of an assigned office location to work in person Tuesday through Thursday. Employees are expected to be in the office on those three days, at minimum. That move came after GM in 2022 broke from a "Work Appropriately" strategy by requiring employees to go back to the office three days of the week.

Barra discussed in detail why the global automaker needed salaried employees back in the office and the benefits of in-office work for employees at the Detroit Economic Club event, noting that "a handful of weeks" into the COVID-19 pandemic in spring 2020, GM already had employees back at work building and designing vehicles.

"You can't design a vehicle over Zoom, and so we asked everybody to be back," Barra said. "Whether it's casual mentoring, casual learning or just networking, you understand what different people do, you run into them in the cafeteria and you have a quick lunch with them. Those are all important parts of development."

Some employees were not happy about GM breaking from the "Work Appropriately" model, which was introduced in April 2021 and described as a new mindset where employees had the choice to work were they did their best work. GM continued to hire during the pandemic, so it had some employees who had never been in the office.

"When people did come back and spent a couple of weeks they were like, 'I get it. I want to be here,'" Barra said.

The GM CEO said "it's a very small minority that I think are just going to be unhappy about everything. I call them cave people ... 'Currently Against Virtually Everything,'" she said. "So many people are excited to be there. They're excited to be in an industry that's changing the world for the better, and so that's what I focus on."

Next year, GM will move some of those employees from its global Renaissance Center headquarters to the Dan Gilbert-backed Hudson's Detroit development. GM has not said how many people will work out of the 12-story mixed-use building at the site. As the development's anchor tenant, the automaker will lease the top two office floors of the structure, which will include office, retail and event space, for 15 years, The Detroit News previously reported.

On Thursday, when asked about the decision to leave the RenCen, Barra said GM has to have the "offices and facilities (that) support the way work is done."

And as GM talked to Gilbert, the company realized it could be the "flagship tenant in that building, which is just gorgeous, and help that area."

As for the RenCen, over the next year GM, Bedrock and the city will evaluate "what's the best use for either that building or that property. We're committed to doing the right thing. It's such prime real estate, when you look at it, and the views are spectacular, so I'm sure we're going to come up with a good solution."

When asked if demolition of the RenCen is under consideration, Barra said: "... we're first looking at what can be done and what would be the appropriate use ... We've got a year to do that, so that's where we're focused."

All GM employees should be at work at least five days a week, if not more. Enjoy your RTW!

It's Friday, the day GM employees who are also side-gigging handymen catch up on all of their calls. It's a busy 4 days for these people. At least Mary gave them some time to get caught up. You can't blame them. Their 401ks aren't going to take them to the finish line, and those boats and campers aren't going to pay for themselves.

Do you some times wonder if you are living in a fantasy world?
Do you also wonder what it's like to serve food or work a cash register?
Nah, you are better than that. YOU are special.

Not GM, but we have a dozen of desktops out of commission with the latest NX install, asked to be updated. Not useable until fully updated, however it's a cluster f*k trying to achieve synchronization with IT to make it happen. I was lead to champion the install, and I know full well why they want this sht updated. Back to office..... But, knowing the bullsht agenda, I'm not so much in a hurry either. Fck em.

Not a single soul wants to go into the office, aside from the desperate and useless abominations. What they don't count on, is the reduction in output due to quiet quitting.

People will always find a way to recover their loss. As some news articles accurately stated, in the monumental hype of 2024 inflation, some people received zero raises on the year. Yes, this is engineering. Salaried.

How f*king hard do you think we're going to work for these companies? Fck em.

Dr Smith told me that CAVE people are a
"Bubble-Headed Bo--y Bulbous Bumpkin".

I stopped all work and now take owernship of my new Captain Caveman persona. That means cooking 2 week old fish leftovers in the microwave, sporting a bearskin onesie and worshipping fire (an EV thermal event).
At least i show up, unlike so many who are still not coming in so they can drink or do side gigs.

I’m sure management isn’t oblivious to an employee whose productivity has dropped or has so little to do they can goof off most of the day.

What goes around comes around and their time of accountability will come soon enough

Rationalizing your choices or distorting the truth is not a good trait of a leader. It’s about time she is replaced by someone more effective.

Should be mindful to be respectful to everyone. At the end of the day, stroll down the wrong street, the wrong alley, say the wrong thing to someone, and desperate people may do desperate things. Money has zero bearing on your status, or how important you think you are.

These corporate elite, in their ivory towers, might best remember this humble posting. I've seen desperate people do incredibly crazy things.

  1. Mary can shape reality. You are are happy to be back in the office.
  2. Everything you thought you felt or understood about the office is wrong. Refer to #1.
  3. You will obey all instructions and abide by all behavioral expectations for the safety and security of your colleagues.
  4. We are one team. You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile.

Lied about the open floor concept plan too. The entire campus was surveyed and 95% of all employees didn't want it. They said tough s**t, it's happening anyways.

It makes you wonder how incredibly disconnected with reality you have to be to lead corporations. You have to be a world class azzhole to be qualified.

My bet is her days are numbered. It’s been about 10 years in the hot seat and what does she have to show for it? Zippo. So she’s resorting to more lies and name calling. Sure signs of an effective leader (sarcasm).

I'm going to start putting Captain Caveman stickers in random places at the VEC.

PS As a descendant of aboriginal cave dwellers, I'm deeply offended by Mary's language and the cultural appropriation by the small percentage of people who refuse to enjoy RTO. How dare you?

the results from the WOC surveys over the last few years prove 90-95% of employees wanted to remain mostly remote, perhaps with a single day per week on site. i'm sure many of you have noticed they no longer ask questions related to RTO because they know we will speak our mind and they don't care what we think on this topic. so for her to say it's only a small minority that aren't happy with RTO is delusional at best, an outright lie at worst.

  1. What is the real percentage of people who enjoy RTO? 2. Do you honestly feel that GM is changing the world for the better? Breaking down #2 would require a very lengthily white paper. I know that you know that between the air pollution, depletion of natural resources, slave labor, government handouts, and the environmental impact of cars in landfills that #2 would get laughed at in a serious debate. She paints herself as saving the world. She paints you as a Luddite.

Synopsis:
Mary, Mary, quite contrary, how does your garden grow?
Why did Mary claim that the majority are happy with RTO and that "a small percentage" didn't fit in after 1.5 years of RTO? I think the writing is on the wall.
She's going to do a purge. Don't think for a second that between the badge scans, Arden looking at your Teams & Outlook communication for keywords, the quarterly reviews and having people justify their existence that a mass layoff isn't coming. She's going to punish the class by taking a bunch of students out to the woodshed.
Ask yourself, do people seem super happy to be in the office? Are they happy and more productive?
Or do they look uncomfortable and afraid? Dialing it in. Calling in with excuses? Not meeting deadlines?
