As a long time remote worker who has now been forced into an office, I find it incredibly liberating to not have to log in before 9am. I now take my hour long lunch and promptly log out at 5pm, not checking or responding to any calls/emails until the next day. I did not realize how much more I was working when remote work was allowed. This also does not include the hours of "collaboration" that I am engaging in while actually in an office while not doing actual work. I still don't understand why AIG prefers badge scans to productivity - actually, I do - it's because this is a RIF in disguise - but if this is what AIG prefers, they shall receive. Morale is pretty low right now across the board because of this mandate but I am making the most of it Anyone else find RTO liberating?

@7rj That's Not correct.
Exempt employees (Not paid by the hour) have No set maximum # hours they must work.
This means according to the Dept. of Labor, exempt employees can actually go home or log out after 1 hour, as long as they complete all or their work to the employer's satisfaction.
Obviously, the optics of going home or logging out after less than 7 hours are Not good. So very few employees do this.
@7me This sounds like a your manager problem not an issue with OP’s approach. You are only required to work the hours that you are paid for. In your example (my opinion) the professional thing to do would be to get the assignment done (option 1 or 3) and then show up late or leave early the next day to offset the extra hours. Your manager cannot force you to work extra time so stand up for yourself
@OP OP That's a beautiful theory.
What happens when your manager keeps dumping work on you and expects the work to be completed Before you log out for the day, which could mean that the work/task could take until 6pm, 7pm, 8pm, etc. to be completed ???
This means 1) You're in the office until an unreasonable hour, with a long commute home AND you'll end up arriving home very late at night.
OR 2) You tell your manager you're in the office and will be logging out early (Before 6pm), the work can Not reasonably be completed Before 6pm. In which case, your manager will be angry with you.
OR 3) You log out early anyway around 5pm, but tell your manager you'll complete the work after you arrive home. So this means even though you're RTO-ing you're Still working 10 to15+ hour days because your MotherFvcken AS$H0LE manager expects work to be completed however many hours it takes even though you're RTO-ing, have a long commute roundtrip, paying for public transportation or parking fees, paying for childcare, etc..
Europe still has not increased RTO.
RTO has been rolled out on different time frames depending on locations on the planet
People who are actually working the entire time, would find it liberating for the reason stated in the post. People who were abusing it by taking care of their kids, or whatever cr-p they did that they know they weren't supposed to be doing while they were "working" would obviously not find it better.
@OP Hello, OP and AIG "Human" Resources Department !
NO employee in their right mind wants to RTO more than 2 Days per let alone all 5 Days per week, because employees can save 10%, 20% or more in after tax money because of the commuting costs, time saved, child care expenses, etc..
Yeah AIG pay is horrible a manager in my group salary was $140/$150k a year ago I saw a posting yesterday $100k to $120k now WHAT A JOKE
Well then pay needs to adjust to RTO because AIG is total sh-t for keeping up with cost of living.
For now RTO is only in the Usa as far as I know, does anyone in Europe got news about similar policies? My office is also way too small to reduce wfh and, moreover, non US insurance companies offer even above 2 days of wfh in my country (but some none). I read here some justify the new policies too, in a very strange Stockholm syndrome ...
This has nothing to do with covid arrangements for most.
Many are griping because they werent 4 days a week in office pre covid because the location strategy was shared workspace and a hybrid schedule.
This RTO is a take away from pre covid flexibility for employees and mananagers managing.
The RTO complainers are like those Japanese soldiers being found on remote pacific islands years after the war ended not knowing their emperor had surrendered - things have moved on.
You people need to realise that it’s 2025 not 2020 and get with the programme. If you don’t like it then go get a job somewhere else - but good luck because nearly every other carrier is slowly pushing back to a 5 day week.
Many business lines are also in free fall rates wise so the grim reaper will be coming in the next 12 to 18 months and all those hiding away at home will most likely be the first names on the chopping block.
You had a good run with no commuting costs, free office equipment etc and now it’s time to step back into the real world.
What do you mean morale is low because of RTO? Maybe it is for people who are still remote which is not a lot. You're a couple years late to the game.
