Thread regarding Sabre Holdings layoffs

Headcount

I am curious, did the headcount really grow by almost 2000 people to just under 12000 and if so, where? All I have seen is attrition, not an increased headcount.

It's not $1B, it's $2B

@7xhj+1f4uisdP Don't they own former ITA software? And it seems to be missing a proper booking/reservation system? And also some travel domain knowledge?

Some, novel initiatives are spiked with former Google folks. The decisions they make and word they spread shows they plan to tie Sabre with Google in many not so obvious areas. They drive ideas that are suboptimal for Sabre and great for Google. Resistance is being ignored or nipped in the bud. Whatever will be the end state- Sabre will be highly Google dependant. And if it goes all wrong - G. can mercifully buy those few new initiatives they value and leave Sabre with even more tech debt. Yes I know I'm a pessimist.

At a 30,000-foot level, Google's partnership with Sabre is in exchange for help in moving Sabre systems to GCP, Sabre agrees to purchase a certain amount Google services over the next ten years. (I'm not sure about the exact amount but I recall seeing a figure of $1B somewhere. Some estimates have put the amount spent so far as low as $10M.) The specific details of the agreement are not public information, which of course raises the question of what happens if Sabre fails to live up to its end of the agreement. If a lower demand for travel becomes the new normal after COVID, then that may not be such a far-fetched scenario.

It's very doubtful Google is interested in owning Sabre. Sabre simply does not align with Google's direction and mission. In my view, the most likely outcome in case of Sabre reneging, is that Google writes off its investment and Sabre pays some penalty and loses any discount it may have. Not a pretty picture for Sabre if they've gone and migrated all their systems to GCP.

We're in situation: Invest & Prevail ... or commit a secure & unevitable business su----e.
Ofc the question is on the quality of the investments and how they are controlled by Google. I still wonder when it will end as hostile takeover...

A lot of contract people in some initiatives. A lot of folks 'sponsored' by Google. There are dynamic hiring activities in new prjs but the core Sabre still needs to keep the numbers tu push this cart forward.

More headcount but because of less experienced younger hands (however more education) and cheaper salary and benefits then overall cost is still lower. Results of low cost model which has its pros and cons but to stay in business in the short run got to cut costs. Need to cut at the higher levels of Mgmt now…
