Thread regarding AIG (American Intl Group Inc.) layoffs

Am I in s goof position as a TAP

Hello,

I'm going to come in as part of the TAP program and want to ask people opinions on the company's future? Seeing as AIG is known to let people go, how safe am I am as a TAP? Will I be the first to be let go if it comes down to it? Also, should I stay after the 2 years are up or should I jump to another company. I know we don't get pau raises during the program, but they don't tell us if we get a raise when we graduate the program. Does anyone know how much of a raise TAP graduates get? Thank you for your time and answers.

@1ves+19Nz0fUW..leading program? Not in insurance industry. Not in technology. Not in anything.
Some of the newbies are good, others sit there and expect others to babysit them.

Thing about a company in this situation - it is a great place to learn. 2 years here is like more elsewhere.

You see things in 2 years it may take 20 to see elsewhere.

Not all good things but still valuable.

So if you take it as a learning experience and you plan to go elsewhere you can come out ahead.

if you are looking for a program that will roll into good stable career opportunities you should look elsewhere.

The "New system" is to hand everything over to Accenture and RIF everyone. A large portion of US IT just got their walking papers yesterday. Accountants have been running IT for three-four years now and it shows. They don't care about "tech debt" they care about "low cost".. Instead of investing in fixing the problem, they've simply outsourced it.

TAP is a great way to start, but AIG isn't a good place to work. Get in, get your experience and get out. If you have similar opportunities elsewhere I suggest you look at those first as keep AIG as a fall back plan. The lack of camaraderie and culture at AIG makes it a depressing place to work, I feel like young analyst programs should have some fun involved and trust me, AIG ain't fun. If you do decide to work at AIG, you will learn hard truths of corporate life (RIFs, No continuity in mgmt, outrageous salaries for underperforming executives, outsourcing both domestic and overseas)

@7cgb+19Nz0fUW...yes there is new system. It's called outsourcing to India but in the most cutthroat way possible (is many good IT folks that worked hard and were very knowledgeable that got RIF'ed like it was nothing, they just woke up one day and were told they were no longer with the company with zero heads up). Since the company lost $6 Billion last year and still paid out the dividend (and the huge executive compensation packages to BD and PZ), there is no funding to go around even though the problems and work for IT piles up.

Regarding the last reply: "This company will not invest in technology and therefore is bad place to stay for any longer than 3 years." I thought there was a new system under development for the entire company?

TAP that already graduated here......I would recommend learning as much as possible during your rotations (learn AWS, NodeJS, Python, Data science if you are into that sort of thing) and then get the eff out of Dodge, as this company has been hemorrhaging money even worse under BD's tenure ship and PZ will not make things any better (he was supposed to turn around GI, but failed miserably as evident by the awful combined ratio for the last year and even the last quarter). This company will not invest in technology and therefore is bad place to stay for any longer than 3 years.

If you have other options then become an AIG TAP, especially in the IT side, find something else.

I'm going to become a TAP as well. Are there any recommendations as far as what position I should go for? And which ones to avoid?

TAP and TAP ‘graduates’ don’t get RIF’ed so you have that going for you!

Agree with posts, spend the 2 years, maybe 3, then get out ASAP.

Place is a sinking ship, especially in IT.

If I was a young "high potential individual" AIG IT is the last place I would want to waste 2 years, but if that is your best offer go for it. You will probably have to learn Hindi so you can train your eventual replacement properly.

TAP is a leading 24-month technology rotation program that recruits high potential individuals from top universities. Throughout the program, TAP participants will develop a breadth and depth of IT skills and capabilities required to excel in the workforce through three 8-month rotations. TAP participants graduate from the program into a full-time role with one of our IT functions.

A quick google search does the trick..

Hi.. current TAP here. You are secure for 2 years after those 2 years it’s free game. Like the post below said .. get your experience and move on! The pay raise is ~$15k once you graduate from the program.

Side note: other current TAPs including myself do not plan on staying long. Do your work, attend the “events”, and take it easy for the next 2 years.

Welcome to AIG :)

Use it for the experience, then get out. Don't let anyone convince you that AIG is a great long term career goal. It is career s–c-de if you stay at AIG more than 3 to 5 years. The world will pass you by. Learn from us. Read the posts on this blog. You are officially warned. You're welcome.
