Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

How many would quit?

If GM mandated a 5 day, in-office work week starting January 2025, what percentage do you think would quit? I'm talking about a no-compromise, 5 day week with core hours. 1%? 5%? You don't show, you get fired like it was February 2020.
What if GM said, "due to the competitive threats, we need salary to work 10 hours a day minimum and PS, there's a 10% salary cut across the board", how many would leave?
10%? 20%?

"And salaried people are "too smart" to get union protection."

No. Salaried people are "too smart" to unionize because they know the corporation will outsource their jobs. They can, they have and they will.
Once again, see Stellantis. All engineering has been replaced by foreign labor.
IT is even more transferable. There's no way out of this.
Unionizing just gets us to the end-game (being replaced) faster.

Salaried workers have no protection.

They can make you work as much as they want, not pay for overtime, fire people for no reason, make working conditions miserable, anything.

And salaried people are "too smart" to get union protection.

Starting March, 2025 ALL government workers are required to work in the office for 5 days. No exceptions and all previous telecommuting agreements have been rescinded.

My belief all along was that once the layoffs in 2025 started, GM would make this announcement. I believe we will hear this soon.
People went from "400% Team GM or Mutiny" to "OMG, are they still cutting next Friday, are they done???".
The workers have ZERO F'ing leverage. GM SLT knows this and will use this for (what they think) more productivity.

I worked for suppliers before I was GM direct over 10 years ago. During recessions, they always made salary workers work 10 hour days sans overtime. They also threaten to fire people who ask for pay increases. Many of us have had large pay CUTS circa 2006. Does any of this ring a bell for some of you? I hope to God GM doesn't do this but they can and they might. Cuts are just one way to make us miserable. They have plenty of tricks up their sleeves. That's why I say, "DIAL IT IN; QUIET QUIT!".

I'm done. They get the barest of minimum and I'm going to walk and smile like I own the place. OWN IT!

Mortgage or rent payment
Car loan payment
Alimony
Kids expenses
Groceries
Medical bills

Therefore, zero people would leave. People would su-k it up and report to work five days a week. It's called survival.

It's not the hours you put in. It's your professionalism and your productivity that will get you the "exceeds." If you are worth your salt, you can get your job done in the 8 hours.
If not, it will not matter if you work 8 hours or 12 hours a day. :)

Many people are just fine with a ‘meets’ rating. Think the issue folks are having (if the claims here are even true) is the hours you described to get an ‘Exceeds’ would supposedly be the expected norm for everyone and to get a ‘Meets’ moving forward. Imo that means you’d then have to work 12-14 hours to get that exceeds rating. How’s that sound?

And the cycle never ends because it’s never enough for the investors in NYC.

"No more layoffs for 2024" was said in my last all people's meeting. And no, I won't tell you which one. Not even a week later, 1,600 more layoffs are announced.

"The strategy used by General Motors for the layoffs will be carried out in two distinct phases. This will affect both full-time and temporary employees. According to a GM spokesperson, the first round of layoffs began to take place last November 18 and affected 686 full-time workers, who will face temporary layoffs. On the other hand, there were 250 temporary workers who had to terminate their contracts permanently.

The next step to be taken by the company is a wave of layoffs due to take place on January 12, 2024. During this phase, an additional 759 full-time employees will be laid off on a temporary basis, further impacting the production force at the Kansas headquarters plant."

No one should EVER believe them. I will refuse to attend any more of their "APM" and "fireside chats". They can't stop lying. Nothing can be gained by giving them time, even if you are on the clock.
They are void, fraud, zero. Collect your check. Mentally be done with it all. Go home. Be with your family.

Does she ever talk to people at the bottom of the ladder, or only her vice presidents and executives?

You'd never see her at the water cooler even if everyone was in the office.

10 hours a day?
Work to what it takes to get the job done. Sometimes, especially new in a role, that can be 10+ hours.
Idk, not going to complain about it. Maybe that’s why I get exceeds.

So quite to go work somewhere else in person 5 days a week?
Everywhere is moving towards that.

GM announces record profits every quarter.

How could they spin the need for pay cuts and unpaid overtime?

They could probably get away with the 5 day RTO so Mary could get some ideas at the water cooler.

That could be the case with most workers but imo a percentage would leave that know their worth and other opportunities than GM. It’s not uncommon for folks that haven’t been there their entire career to leave and receive an increase in compensation.

If there is a 5 day per week RTO mandate, I will take my retirement a few years earlier than planned 100%.

0% would quit. These people talk a big game but they would simply moan and grown and then be there every days, five days a week.

I know at least a few people near retirement that said they’d quit if 5 days a week in office was mandatory. Me personally? If the put in a mandatory 10 hours a day I wouldn’t quit but would start looking for another job. Imo that’s essentially a pay cut.

Given GMs current financial performance there would be huge pushback on either mandatory 10 hours or pay cuts. Usually you see those things in times of a hard recession. Not when there are stock but backs and record high Dow prices.
